KTM’s parent company, Pierer Mobility Group, had acquired controlling stake in the Italian brand earlier this year
KTM’s financial woes have been well known, the Austrian brand going into self administration to save itself. And one of the ways that the company might recuperate from the losses is perhaps to bid adieu to something it recently acquired: MV Agusta. The Varese-based company has had several ownerships across the years and it seemed that finally under Austrian stewardship, it would be back to its former glory. But things seem far from ideal.
From picking up 25.1 percent in November 2022, Pierer Mobility Group (KTM’s parent company) bought controlling stake in MV Agusta in March. The plans were to move Agusta’s production from Varese to Austria to optimise the Italian firm’s performance and futures. However, it seems that PMG feels that MV Agusta “is no longer considered a strategic asset.” As a result, the decision making and motorcycle production will likely remain in Italy.
All said and done, MV Agusta’s chequered history gets another chapter of dicey ownership. The ownership curse continues. The only positive that the next owners of the brand might enjoy is the fact that Agusta is on a positive growth trajectory. It has sold over 4000 motorcycles already in 2024, outperforming its 2023 record by 116 percent.
There is yet to be official confirmation from KTM or Pierer Mobility’s side on the same but the outcome is more or less going to be what is being predicted. And if that does goes through, it shall remain a shame that the slim chance of witnessing the MV Agusta name back on the MotoGP grid will remain a distant dream.
