The launch will be of a low cost variant in next couple of months
Bajaj Auto's electric scooter, the Chetak, is poised for portfolio growth as the company confirms a new variant addition. In a recent interview, Bajaj’s Rakesh Sharma, revealed plans to broaden the Chetak portfolio within the next couple of months. This strategic move indicates Bajaj's intent to cater to a wider range of customer segments in the electric scooter market.
While details about the new variant remain undisclosed, it suggests it could target a different price point or offer distinct features compared to the existing Premium and Urbane models. It could be a low price option without any of the fancy tech features and solely focus on a pure and economical riding experience. Currently, the Chetak caters to a premium segment with its two variants. The Premium variant has a TFT screen, while the Urbane features an LCD display. Both variants offer optional TecPac connectivity features like navigation, music control, and call alerts. Additionally, TecPac unlocks hill-hold control, reverse mode, and a sportier riding experience.
Bajaj is also aggressively expanding its dealership network. Bajaj’s Rakesh Sharma added “In another three months or so from the current 200 odd stores, we should be in 500 plus stores and all that is definitely going to have an impact on sales. We want every month to be better than the previous one. And we want a very strong podium finish over there so that as the sector develops, we can strive for leadership there too.”
With the new variant introduction and dealership network expansion, Bajaj is making a strategic push to capture a larger market share in the electric scooter space.
For those interested in the existing Chetak models, the Premium variant offers a 3.2kWh battery with a 126 km range, while the Urbane delivers 113 km (extendable to 126 km with TecPac). Both variants come equipped with electric motors offering a peak power of 4kW and a peak torque of 16 Nm. The top speed is capped at 73 kmph for the Premium variant and 63 kmph for the Urbane variant (extendable to 73 kmph with TecPac). Prices range from ₹ 1,17,285 to ₹ 1,44,566.
With the upcoming variant and dealership expansion, Bajaj is making a strong play to solidify its presence in the ever-evolving electric scooter market.
