Isuzu has officially entered the electric vehicle segment with the introduction of its first fully electric pickup truck, the D-MAX EV. The Japanese automaker, known globally for its rugged and utilitarian vehicles, will begin mass production of the electric model in the coming months, with deliveries for European markets scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2025.
Based on the existing D-MAX platform, the EV variant retains much of the original model’s utility-focused design but swaps out the diesel powertrain for a dual-motor electric setup. Featuring newly developed e-Axles mounted at the front and rear, the D-MAX EV operates with a full-time four-wheel-drive system.
The electric powertrain generates a combined output of 188 bhp and delivers up to 325 Nm of torque. According to Isuzu, the D-MAX EV matches the diesel version in terms of towing and payload capabilities. The vehicle is rated to tow over 3,500 kg, and it offers a payload capacity exceeding 1,010 kg. For comparison, the diesel D-MAX supports up to 3,500 kg towing and a payload of 1,200 kg.
A 66.9 kWh battery powers the D-MAX EV, offering a WLTP-estimated range of up to 263 km. In urban driving conditions, the range increases to approximately 361 km. While the range is modest compared to newer electric trucks in larger markets, Isuzu appears to be targeting practical, commercial-focused buyers rather than the high-performance consumer EV segment. Ground clearance measures over 210 mm, and the D-MAX EV boasts a wading depth of nearly 600 mm, maintaining the off-road credentials that have long been a selling point of the D-MAX line.
Initial production is focused on left-hand drive models, with the first units heading to European markets. Production of right-hand drive models is set to begin later in 2025, with sales in the UK scheduled for 2026. Isuzu’s D-MAX lineup is already sold in over 100 countries across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and the Americas, suggesting a broad market opportunity for the electric variant.
Pricing for the D-MAX EV has not been officially announced, but it is expected to launch at a premium over the current diesel version. In Europe, the base diesel D-MAX is priced at approximately €36,500 (around ₹35.09 lakh), so the electric version is likely to exceed that figure.
