The new Leaf rides on Nissan’s CMF-EV platform—the same architecture that supports the Ariya—and introduces dual charging ports.

The 2026 Nissan Leaf marks a significant evolution for one of the most iconic names in electric mobility. As the world’s first mass-market EV, the Leaf debuted more than a decade ago with much fanfare and promise. However, over time, it lost momentum in the face of rapidly advancing competition, primarily due to its modest range and slow charging speeds. Now in its third generation, Nissan aims to rectify those shortcomings while retaining the Leaf’s accessibility and practicality.

The third-generation Leaf receives a complete exterior overhaul. Unlike its predecessors—which shifted from quirky (first-gen) to conservative (second-gen)—the 2026 model adopts a bold and expressive design. It blends contemporary aerodynamic styling with playful Japanese charm. The scythe-shaped LED headlights, pillar-mounted rear door handles, and flush front handles contribute to a drag coefficient of 0.26, down from the previous 0.29. Retro-inspired 3D taillights, reminiscent of the Nissan Z, add visual flair at the rear. Customers can choose from dual-tone shades like Seabreeze Blue Pearl and Coulis Red Pearl with black roofs, along with solid options like Deep Ocean Blue Pearl and Gun Metallic.

The most notable upgrade lies under the skin. The new Leaf rides on Nissan’s CMF-EV platform—the same architecture that supports the Ariya—and introduces dual charging ports. The driver-side J1772 port supports Level 2 charging, while the passenger-side NACS (North American Charging Standard) port provides access to more than 20,000 Tesla Superchargers.

Tech-wise, the dashboard hosts dual digital displays.

At launch, the Leaf will offer a 75 kWh liquid-cooled battery paired with a front-mounted electric motor producing 211 bhp and 354 Nm of torque. Charging speeds of up to 150 kW are now possible—another major leap forward. Later, a more affordable S trim with a 52 kWh battery and 171 bhp will join the lineup. Though range figures are not yet available for this version, it too will feature the NACS port for fast charging.

Inside, the 2026 Leaf feels far more upscale and spacious. A flat floor enhances cabin openness, and early impressions suggest that both front and rear seats offer improved comfort and space. The rear seat experience, often compromised in EVs by battery packaging, has also been enhanced, providing ample headroom and legroom for adults.

The new Nissan Leaf sits on 19-inch alloy wheels.

Tech-wise, the dashboard hosts dual digital displays. Entry-level S and S+ trims get a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, while the SV+ and Platinum+ versions benefit from a larger 14.3-inch unit. A separate physical climate control bar maintains user-friendly ergonomics.

Standard features include wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, built-in Amazon Alexa, and ProPilot Assist—a semi-autonomous driving aid. Higher trims add native Google apps like Maps and Assistant. A push-button gear selector has replaced the old shifter, freeing up space in the centre console. Small details, like a wireless charging pad featuring a ginkgo leaf emblem, underscore Nissan’s attention to design and heritage.

The third-generation Leaf receives a complete exterior overhaul.

The cargo area is more functional than ever. A hatchback-style opening and low load floor make for easy access, and an underfloor cubby adds hidden storage. Platinum+ trims offer a panoramic glass roof that can be dimmed in segments for increased comfort.

Another new addition is V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) capability. Using the J1772 port with an adapter, the Leaf can power home appliances or tools during outages or outdoor use. The Platinum+ model even includes a dedicated V2L outlet in the boot area.

The new Nissan Leaf is larger than a Toyota Prius but smaller than a Kia EV6.

Despite its taller proportions and Nissan’s references to “crossover” styling, the new Leaf blurs the line between hatchback and SUV. It is larger than a Toyota Prius but smaller than a Kia EV6. While all-wheel drive—often a defining SUV feature—is not offered, the Leaf’s elevated stance and interior practicality may still appeal to crossover buyers.
