BMW appears to be revisiting classic design elements with the revival of the tall and slender kidney grille.

As anticipation mounts for BMW's Annual Press Conference scheduled for Thursday, March 21, enthusiasts have been treated to yet another glimpse of the German automaker's forthcoming electric crossover, the Vision Neue Klasse X. The teaser video, marks the second official asset to emerge, providing fans with a closer look at what is poised to become the next-generation iX3.

BMW

Drawing inspiration from its illustrious past, BMW appears to be revisiting classic design elements with the revival of the tall and slender kidney grille, reminiscent of its debut in the 1930s. The leaked concept image showcases a muscular aesthetic, featuring a robust front bumper and square wheel arches. While side cameras are currently in place, they are expected to be replaced by conventional mirrors upon the iX3's production commencement in mid-2025. However, it's worth noting that the road-ready model is likely to incorporate standard sensors, deviating from the uncluttered appearance depicted in the leaked photo.

Hints of a potential M version are suggested by the somewhat bulging wheel arches, indicating BMW's inclination towards performance-oriented variants. Continuing the trend established by its sedan counterpart, the Vision Neue Klasse X boasts a spacious greenhouse accentuated by a large panoramic sunroof, presumably curved at the rear. Although apparent door handles are absent, camouflaged prototypes of the 2025 iX3 have been observed with flush handles, hinting at their inclusion in the final design.

While details regarding the rear of the concept remain elusive, previous controversy surrounding the sedan's thick horizontal taillights mounted prominently suggests a departure from traditional design conventions. The crossover iteration is anticipated to prioritize practicality with a tailgate facilitating a rounded rear end, potentially augmented by a sizable upper spoiler extending from the roofline.

BMW

Though the subsequent iX3 is not expected to mirror the Vision Neue Klasse X entirely, the concept serves as a harbinger of BMW's evolving design language. Embracing a "less is more" ethos, the company intends to elevate minimalism within the cabin, with fewer conventional buttons and the elimination of the iDrive controller. Control functionalities will predominantly shift to the tenth-generation infotainment centre screen.

Following its slated debut in 2025, the iX3 will be succeeded by the sedan variant in 2026, with BMW poised to introduce at least four additional models by 2028. While the identities of these forthcoming models remain undisclosed, speculation suggests possibilities such as an i3 Touring and an iX4.
