The current-generation Toyota Fortuner completes a decade this year, and the Japanese automaker is working on the replacement with a global debut planned for later this year.

With the ninth-generation Toyota Hilux breaking cover in November last year, Toyota is gearing up to introduce the next-generation Fortuner, and the first spy shot of the SUV being tested has now dropped online from Thailand. The current-generation Toyota Fortuner completes a decade this year, and the Japanese automaker is working on the replacement with a global debut planned for later this year.

The Fortuner and Hilux have closely shared platforms and the new-generation will be built the same way. The SUV will get the same upgraded Innovative International Multi-purpose Vehicle (IMV) architecture, which continues to be a ladder-frame unit but has been modernised to accommodate petrol, diesel, 48-volt hybrid, fully electric, and even hydrogen fuel-cell powertrains, depending on the market.

While the test mule gives away little on the design front, the new Toyota Fortuner is expected to take several cues from the latest Hilux, including the upright rose, large grille, sharper headlamps, and a flat bonnet. The rear shows a squared-off profile with sharper-looking taillights, as well as redesigned bumper and tailgate. Expect the rugged nature to be present but in a more modern avatar.

The cabin is also expected to retain much from the new Hilux. The new generation of the pick-up arrived with a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display, a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and more. The current generation version has several limitations in terms of the electrical architecture, which will be addressed in the upcoming offering, which will get other creature comforts like electrically adjustable front seats, ventilation, electric power steering, and the updated Toyota Safety Sense suite with driver assistance features.

The new Fortuner will be capable of receiving over-the-air (OTA) updates, ensuring a longer life for the electronic systems. Other upgrades include improved cabin space and comfort. The suspension is also expected to see a revision for a more pliant ride quality, and overall improved plastic and material quality in the cabin.

Powering the third-generation Toyota Fortuner will be the 2.8-litre diesel and 2.7-litre petrol engine options, and a 2.8-litre 48-volt mild-hybrid diesel, the latter being introduced recently in India. There will be an all-electric version as well, while an FCEV could join the lineup in the future for global markets. India, however, is expected to get the tried and tested petrol and diesel engines with the mild-hybrid technology. Transmission options will include the 6-speed manual and torque converter automatic paired with either engine.

The third-gen Toyota Fortuner is expected to make its debut by the end of this year. Thailand will be one of the first markets to get the model, while an India launch can be ascertained by early 2027. The full-size SUV remains the segment-leader in India, but is now facing the heat from newer rivals including the MG Majestor, Volkswagen Tayron, and Skoda Kodiaq.
