Once deployed in production vehicles, the system will be capable of making split-second decisions through precise real-time environmental awareness.
Nissan has announced plans to introduce its next-generation autonomous driving technology, dubbed ProPilot, in fiscal year 2027. The advanced system will include the company's Ground Truth Perception technology, which combines next-generation Lidar sensors with Wayve AI Driver software to enable autonomous driving with sophisticated collision avoidance capabilities.
According to Nissan, the Wayve AI Driver software "is designed to handle highly complex real-world driving conditions in a human-like manner." The technology leverages machine learning (ML) to continuously improve by analysing vast amounts of driving data, which the automaker plans to use across its future product lineup.
Once deployed in production vehicles, the system will be capable of making split-second decisions through precise real-time environmental awareness. The technology demonstrates particularly impressive capabilities in challenging scenarios, including avoiding overturned trailers, responding to suddenly stopped vehicles, and executing emergency manoeuvres in complex traffic situations.
One of the system's most notable features is its ability to detect and avoid flying objects through advanced 3D spatial recognition, further enhancing occupant safety.
The technology is being developed in collaboration with Wayve, an international artificial intelligence (AI) company specialising in autonomous driving solutions. Wayve's foundational embodied AI model is built using extensive real-world driving data combined with custom generative AI technology, enabling point-to-point navigation in both urban environments and highway settings with improved safety and reliability.
A key strength of the foundation model is its adaptability to new situations and platforms, which Nissan expects will accelerate the broader implementation of autonomous driving solutions across its vehicle lineup.
