The Driverless technology will be available to customers from early 2027.
Nissan has unveiled its driverless technology which will be available to use by customers in Japan as early as 2027. This tech has been introduced to rival Waymo, Alphabet’s own driverless technology which is expected to launch in Japan later this year. The Japanese manufacturer has tested the driverless tech on public roads in Yokohama’s Minto Mirai area in Japan.
The test-mule of this technology, based on the Nissan Serena, employed six LIDAR sensors, nine radars and 14 cameras. The Serena is not the first test vehicle used by Nissan, but it says it was the most successful as the height of the MPV helps offer a wide area to be detected by the roof-mounted sensors.
Nissan believes this will help solve a major issue in Japan, such as driver shortages due to an aging population. The new driverless technology will not only be limited to Japan but will also cater to different markets and will be based on their traffic conditions. Nissan also tested for various scenarios, including an emergency stop situation.
The Japanese manufacturer’s autonomous driving tech is expected to roll out to customers by early 2027, and Nissan will conduct more tests of this technology till early 2026. The brand plans to have 20 such vehicles plying the roads during the testing period.
