Gadkari is the only minister in the NDA cabinet to have retained the same portfolio since 2014.
Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has embarked on his third consecutive term in office. Gadkari, who first assumed the role in May 2014, is the only minister in the NDA cabinet to have retained the same portfolio since 2014. His tenure has been marked by significant reforms and developments in India's road infrastructure.
A longstanding advocate for environmentally friendly fuels, Gadkari plans to push for the mass adoption of hydrogen fuel. Despite its current technological limitations, he aims to build the necessary infrastructure to support greener fuel alternatives, including hydrogen.
The ministry will prioritize the pan-India implementation of cashless treatment for road accident victims. This initiative began as a pilot project in Chandigarh, offering up to ₹1.5 lakh per person for a maximum of seven days following an accident. Ensuring vehicle owners have valid third-party insurance is a critical step in this direction.
Vision 2047 aims to develop access-controlled multi-lane highways and expressways nationwide. Although the project details were submitted to the Cabinet last year, they await approval. The ministry will renew efforts to get the project off the ground, focusing on long-term logistical needs and connectivity improvements.
The ministry will prioritize the implementation of an Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) across at least 500 km of highways. Additionally, there will be a push for satellite-based tolling to provide a seamless and barrier-free tolling experience, enhancing the efficiency and transparency of toll operations.
To improve connectivity in remote and difficult regions, the ministry plans to expand ropeway projects. These projects are faster and cheaper to develop compared to traditional road infrastructure.
Even before Gadkari officially resumed office, the ministry began working on key projects. Last week, it invited global expressions of interest in developing a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-based electronic toll collection system. This aims to enhance toll operations and provide a better experience for highway users.
On the eve of Gadkari's return, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) unveiled a new corporate identity for the National Highways Infra Trust (NHIT). The NHIT aims to monetize projects worth ₹15,000-20,000 crore within the current financial year.
Gadkari's tenure has seen transformative changes in India's road infrastructure. Over the past decade, travel times across major cities have significantly reduced, and road quality has improved, earning praise from various quarters, including opposition leaders.
