The proposal aims to reduce noise pollution and make urban soundscapes more pleasant.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has announced plans to introduce a new law that would mandate the use of sounds derived from Indian musical instruments in vehicle horns. The proposal aims to reduce noise pollution and make urban soundscapes more pleasant.

Speaking at a media conclave, Gadkari stated, "I am planning to make a law that horns of all vehicles should be in Indian musical instruments so that it is pleasant to hear. Flute, tabla, violin, harmonium." He added that the move is intended to address the growing issue of urban noise pollution while promoting India's cultural identity.

Noise pollution, particularly from traffic, has become a major concern in Indian cities. Traditional vehicle horns are often loud, abrupt, and harsh, contributing to public stress and health concerns. Gadkari’s proposal would mark a shift in regulatory approach, blending environmental goals with cultural elements.

The minister also spoke about broader environmental challenges tied to the transport sector, which he said is responsible for nearly 40 per cent of the country's air pollution. He emphasised that the government is actively promoting the use of green fuels such as methanol and ethanol, as well as electric and bio-fuel-powered vehicles, in a bid to reduce carbon emissions and fossil fuel dependence.

Turning to economic performance, Gadkari highlighted the significant growth of India’s automobile industry. “In 2014, the sector was worth ₹14 trillion. Today, it has grown to ₹22 trillion,” he said. He noted that India has now overtaken Japan to become the third-largest automobile market in the world, behind only the United States and China.

The minister pointed out that India earns substantial revenue from automobile exports, especially two-wheelers and passenger cars, reinforcing the sector’s importance in the national economy.
