However, the Union Minister is yet to commit a timeline to meet this ambitious target. (Representative Image)

At an official gathering, Union Minster of Road, Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, voiced his stance again on slashing GST on hybrid vehicles. Furthermore, he also vowed to get rid of the country of all petrol and diesel cars. As ambitious as it sounds, Gadkari stated that it will be difficult but possible.

The minister's statement comes in his bid to promote the use of biofuels. Furthermore, he cited how ₹16 lakh crore is spent on fuel imports, and biofuels will not just help the country become self-dependent but will also improve the lives of farmers, and villages and youth will get employed. While environmental activists uphold Gadkari’s ambitious vision, they also pointed out how fossil fuel is heavily used for electricity production.

On the same lines, Nitin Gadkari also mentioned that the proposal to reduce GST on hybrid vehicles from 12 percent to 5 percent has already been sent to the finance ministry and the requisition is being considered. He further cited how manufacturers like Hero, Bajaj, and TVS plan to manufacture motorcycles using flex engines. Tata and Ashok Leyland have also introduced CVs that run on hydrogen fuels, and there are around 350 factories across the country of bio-CNG. “A revolution is taking place… the fuel imports will end and this country will become self-reliant,” concluded Gadkari.
