The confirmation came soon after India and the UK successfully signed a Free Trade Agreement.
TVS has confirmed that it will launch the iconic British brand, Norton Motorcycles, in India this year. The confirmation came soon after India and the UK successfully signed a Free Trade Agreement yesterday, which will see a lot of high tariffs get abolished on automobile export-imports from both the countries. TVS might also manufacture Norton bikes in India and it has already allotted £200 million (close to ₹2,200 crores) for this purpose including R&D and manufacturing.
This upcoming range of bikes are expected to be affordable in nature and will be primarily targeted towards taking on Royal Enfield bikes. The Chennai-based manufacturer has been dominating the 350-650 cc two-wheeler segment in the country with its wide range of offerings. TVS did try to take on RE by launching the Ronin, but in terms of sales, the Ronin couldn’t even come close to what RE has been raking in consistently. The upcoming range of Norton bikes might stand a chance against Royal Enfield, for the British brand enjoys a similar reputation of being very authentically retro, and at the same look consistently very premium and well polished. However, details regarding these low capacity Norton motorcycles remain scarce.
Furthermore, Norton Motorcycles has also confirmed that it is developing six new motorcycles which will launch over a period of three years. These upcoming range of bikes are slated for launch in India and while details are still limited, we’re hoping it will be built on a 500-700 cc platform. As this segment has been witnessing a lot of action and there’s a huge potential for the same – either way, we can’t wait for Norton to commence operations in our country, and the fact that it will happen this year, couldn’t get us more excited.
