Nvidia has already started designing ARM-based CPUs for Windows PCs.
In a move that could disrupt Intel's dominance in the PC processor market, Nvidia and AMD are planning to make CPUs based on the ARM architecture for Windows-based personal computers.
Nvidia, known primarily for its graphics cards and AI accelerators, has already started designing ARM-based CPUs for Windows PCs. AMD, which has long used Intel's x86 architecture, will also embrace ARM as it looks to diversify its product portfolio.
This comes at a time when Qualcomm is expected to announce a new series of high-performance ARM processors for PCs, taking direct aim at Apple's popular M-series chips used in Macs.
Microsoft has been pushing device makers to adopt ARM for a couple of years now, as the industry moves to more power-efficient computing. The latest Intel CPUs coming later this year have also incorporated some techniques used in smartphones and other mobile devices.
After switching from Intel to its custom ARM-based silicon, Apple has managed to significantly boost Mac sales and market share. Microsoft clearly wants Windows PC makers to replicate Apple's success.
Nvidia and AMD's ARM-based chips are expected by 2025. Qualcomm has been in the ARM PC CPU space since 2016 but with limited traction. However, its acquisition of Nuvia, founded by ex-Apple engineers, could be a game-changer. Nuvia's technology will power Qualcomm's upcoming flagship PC processors.
Nvidia also recently took a stake in ARM, after its plans to acquire the company fell through last year amid regulatory hurdles.
The entry of GPU giants Nvidia and AMD into the ARM PC segment spells trouble for Intel, which has dominated this space for decades. With Windows ensuring cross-compatibility, consumers may soon have many more options when shopping for their next PC.
