An embarrassing blunder by a Nvidia engineer has exposed intellectual property theft and reignited a legal battle between two giants in the autonomous driving industry, as per Bloomberg.
During a virtual meeting in March 2022, Mohammad Moniruzzaman of Nvidia accidentally shared his computer screen with former colleagues at Valeo SE. The screen displayed files containing proprietary robocar technology that Moniruzzaman had stolen from Valeo before joining Nvidia.
Moniruzzaman's screen-sharing gaffe provided a rare, undeniable look at intellectual property theft in an industry where companies fiercely protect their self-driving secrets. It has now plunged Nvidia into a lawsuit filed by Valeo in California.
According to the suit, Moniruzzaman downloaded over 60,000 files and 6GB of source code from Valeo just before resigning in 2021. He was later convicted in Germany of infringing on Valeo's business secrets and fined $15,750.
The virtual meeting blunder in March ultimately exposed Moniruzzaman's misconduct to Valeo. The company is now suing Nvidia, claiming it knew or should have known its new employee had stolen proprietary information.
The legal battle highlights the immense value of robocar technology as companies race to dominate a self-driving car market expected to be worth $400 billion by 2035. It also underscores the challenges of preventing insider theft of trade secrets in an industry with massive financial incentives for disruption.
Nvidia claimed in a June letter it was unaware of any issues until Moniruzzaman reported being investigated the previous month. The lawsuit is currently ongoing.
