Ola Electric

The company clarified that its 4680 Bharat Cell uses dry electrode technology in a cylindrical form factor, which differs from the pouch cell format mentioned in the allegations.

Ola Electric Mobility Limited issued a statement on 9 November 2025 to deny reports of illegally acquiring battery technology from South Korea's LG Energy Solution. The company filed a clarification with the National Stock Exchange of India and BSE Limited under SEBI regulations after media reports surfaced about technology leak allegations.

South Korean media outlets reported that LG Energy Solution had notified authorities about a former researcher who allegedly transferred proprietary technology to Ola Electric. The reports stated that the researcher is under investigation by South Korea's National Intelligence Service, Seoul Metropolitan Police, and LG Energy Solution for allegedly leaking pouch-type ternary lithium-ion battery manufacturing processes and know-how.

The technology in question relates to pouch-type battery cells, which South Korea classifies as "national core technology" under the Industrial Technology Protection Act. The former LG researcher reportedly departed from the company in late 2023.

According to reports, the researcher admitted to transferring information but claimed he was unaware that it contained confidential data. An LG Energy Solution official confirmed that the company identified the situation and alerted authorities.

Ola Electric rejected the allegations in a statement issued to media stakeholders on 9 November 2025. The company stated that the pouch cell technology mentioned in reports is not an area of research or commercial interest for the firm.

The company clarified that its 4680 Bharat Cell uses dry electrode technology in a cylindrical form factor, which differs from the pouch cell format mentioned in the allegations. Ola Electric stated that its battery technology surpasses the pouch cell technology referenced in media reports.

The company highlighted that the timing of the allegations coincides with the commercial production of its 4680 Bharat Cell, which entered the market in November 2025. Ola Electric began deliveries of its S1 Pro+ scooter powered by the 4680 Bharat Cell on 6 November 2025.

Ola Electric stated that the allegations appear motivated by fears of losing market opportunities as the company competes directly with South Korean battery manufacturers in the domestic market. The company suggested that the timing of media leaks to South Korean press and their replication in Indian media appears questionable.

The firm emphasised its commitment to indigenous battery innovation, noting that it has filed 720 patents, of which 124 have been granted. The company's Battery Innovation Centre in Bengaluru employs over 250 specialists from global cell technology companies.

Ola Cell Technologies has established a Gigafactory with a cumulative investment of ₹2,500 crore, which the company claims is India's first operational facility of this type. The company recently secured ARAI certification under AIS-156 Amendment 4 standards for its 5.2 kWh battery packs.

This incident follows a separate case in South Korea where prosecutors charged individuals in November 2025 for allegedly leaking Samsung SDI's battery technology to companies in Vietnam and China. South Korean authorities have intensified scrutiny of battery technology transfers as the sector faces competition from emerging markets.

Ola Electric is ramping up production capacity for its battery technology and expects revenues from its in-house cell manufacturing and residential energy storage system. The company secured certification from the Automotive Research Association of India for its battery packs ahead of commercial deliveries.
