Homegrown Ola Electric, headed by Bhavish Aggarwal, on Thursday announced its foray into the battery energy storage systems (BESS) sector and introduced Ola Shakti -- a portable power solution designed to operate air conditioners, refrigerators, agricultural water pumps, and equipment for commercial establishments. This move is the Ola's diversification beyond electric mobility into the bigger clean energy landscape.
The Ola Shakti lineup features four capacity variants: 1.5 kWh, 3 kWh, 5.2 kWh and 9.1 kWh, with introductory prices set at ₹29,999, ₹55,999, ₹1,19,999 and ₹1,59,999, respectively for the initial batch of 10,000 units.
"We didn't name the company Ola Auto; we named it Ola Electric, and our vision has always been to bring the whole energy storage supply chain into the market. Today, we are launching Ola Shakthi, which is the last-mile grid-complementing solution. We will offer power backup, solar storage, voltage stability and power portability," Aggarwal said.
Prospective buyers can reserve their units with a ₹999 advance payment, while product deliveries are scheduled to commence by Makar Sankranti 2026.
"Ola Shakti represents a fundamental shift in how Indians access, control, and consume energy, as a portable, on-demand resource designed for modern Indian households, farms, and businesses. With its entry into the BESS market, the company expects its annual consumption for BESS to scale up to 5 GWh in the next couple of year," Aggarwal added.
The company states that Ola Shakti incorporates advanced capabilities including instantaneous power transition, IP67-certified weatherproof battery protection, and app-based real-time performance tracking. The system can run household appliances such as cooling systems, refrigeration units, and water pumps, delivering approximately 1.5 hours of continuous backup when operating at maximum capacity.
Ola Electric intends to capitalise on its established gigafactory facilities, 4680 battery cell manufacturing capability, and pan-India retail presence to expand its BESS market footprint without requiring substantial additional capital investment.
"Our existing service centres and networks will be utilised for these energy storage solutions as well. Our network centres are constantly growing," Aggarwal said.
The initial product release targets the business-to-consumer (B2C) market segment. However, business-to-business (B2B) solutions are currently under development, according to Aggarwal.
"B2B will be a container grid product, which we will launch later and this launch will largely be B2C. We expect the home energy market to grow, It will also have applications in commercial or small business as well. It can be stacked up as well to get 27 kwh as well. It can power a small community with it," Aggarwal said.
