Ola Electric has announced that it has received an ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India) certification for the indigeneously-developed and manufactured 4680 Bharat Cell battery packs. Available in 5.2 kWh configuration, the battery pack has been awarded the certification by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways under the the latest AIS-156 Amendment 4 standards. This means, the Bengaluru-based EV startup can now dispatch its vehicles powered by its own 4680 Bharat Cells. This certified battery pack will make its debut on the S1 Pro+ (5.2 kWh) making it Ola’s first electric two-wheeler to feature its homegrown cell technology. The latest ARAI certification of the 4680 Bharat Cells is a big boost as the Bhavish Aggarwal-led electric two-wheeler company plans to increase production capacity at the Gigafactory in Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu.Speaking on this development, Ola Electric spokesperson said, “With the ARAI certification of our 4680 Bharat Cell battery pack, we are ready to deliver our first vehicles powered by our own cells. This is a defining milestone in our mission to build India’s EV technology leadership and reduce reliance on global supply chains. Customers will soon be able to experience the enhanced range, performance and reliability that our homegrown cells bring to our scooters and motorcycles.”Until now, Ola Electric, like most EV OEMs in India, had been using third-party cells for its electric scooters and motorcycles, all certified under AIS-156. Ola says that the homegrown battery cells are expected to significantly enhance range, performance, improve unit economics, and reduce dependence on global supply chains, especially as its upcoming Gigafactory scales production.Through a release shared on its website, Ola Electric claims that the 4680 Bharat Cell battery pack has undergone some of the most rigorous testing regimes in the world guaranteeing safety, electrical reliability, and performance across extreme climate and operating conditions. The battery pack successfully cleared tests such as water immersion, vibration durability, and thermal shock resistance, reinforcing Ola’s focus on safety and durability.Currently, the Ola S1 Pro Plus comes with a 5.3 kWh battery that claims to return a range of 320 km on a single charge. Expect the new homegrown 5.2 kWh unit to better this figure. Powering the scooter is a 13 kW mid-ship mounted electric motor. As for performance, the S1 Pro Plus can clock a top speed of 141 kmph and can accelerate from 0 to 40 kmph in 2.1 seconds. Also Read: Sona Comstar Develops Rare Earth-Free Ferrite Motor for EVs
