ArsTechnica Journalist Ron Amadeo experienced the Pixel Fold's display failure firsthand
The Pixel Fold, which marked Google's entry into the foldable phone market, has encountered a significant setback as the phone's display malfunctioned after just four days of usage. Now, it raises questions about the durability of foldable devices and the challenges manufacturers face in ensuring long-term reliability. ArsTechnica Journalist Ron Amadeo experienced the Pixel Fold's display failure firsthand, and he shed light on the underlying issues with foldable technology.
Amadeo's experience with the Pixel Fold started on a positive note; however, the phone's flexible OLED display unexpectedly stopped functioning within a few days. The lower portion of the screen developed a white line of bright pixels, followed by unresponsive touch controls and a growing white gradient across the display.
Amadeo draws attention to the common approach taken by manufacturers in constructing foldable screens. "Samsung, BOE, and pretty much every other company making foldable screens build these flexible OLEDs the same way," he writes.
The foldable phones in the market today use an ultra-thin glass cover over the OLED panel along with a protective plastic layer to maintain structural integrity. However, as Amadeo explains, the plastic coating isn't so "protective" after all. It does not extend entirely to the edges, leaving some space where the OLED panel is exposed to debris and other particles.
This exposed area, or the OLED death zone as he calls it, is an area where even a tiny spec or particle, when trapped between the screens, could result in permanent display damage.
While the Pixel Fold initially promised an exciting entry into the foldable phone market, this incident echoes a broader concern surrounding the durability of foldable smartphones.
