Porsche will axe the internal combustion engine version of the 718 in favour of its electric iterations.
Porsche is ending the production of the 718 Boxster and Cayman with the internal combustion engine (ICE), according to a new report by Automobilwoche. Porsche’s production manager, Albrecht Reimold, told the German newspaper that the two 718 models will go out of production in the middle of 2025.
Reimold also said that the two sportscars are being discontinued to make way for the all-electric 718. He also said the new electric sportscars will maintain the fun element of the 718 ICE models, having driven the prototypes. However, he didn’t divulge much about the upcoming electric sports car.
Along with the 718, Porsche will discontinue the Macan ICE and only retail the newly launched Macan EV. While the ICE versions of the 718 models and the Macan are not on sale in Europe, they’re still available in other markets. In Europe, the three models have been discontinued due to the European Union’s (EU) new cybersecurity laws. New vehicles in the EU need a new certification that confirms they are protected against 70 vulnerabilities.
While the information on the electric 718 models is under wraps, they are expected to be revealed sometime in 2025. It is also expected to get the convertible version first, just like how the Boxtser was the first of the two models to be released in 1996. In India, Porsche sells the 718 Cayman, Cayman Style Edition, Cayman GTS and Cayman GT4 RS as well as the 718 Boxster, Boxster Style Edition and Boxster GTS.
