Bajaj’s Pulsar N150 is one of the most recognizable commuter motorcycles on Indian roads. Partly for its shared styling with the bigger N250, but also because of its iconic ‘Pulsar’ moniker. The Yamaha FZ-S Fi V3 is another typical Japanese offering with on-point ergonomics and hassle-free ownership. So, which is the most sensible of the two, especially after the update both the bikes received at the start of 2024?

The 2024 Bajaj Pulsar N150 continues mechanically unchanged into 2024. The Yamaha FZ-S Fi V3 has also remained the same over the years. Tuned to be a typical city commute, the Pulsar N150 feels more punchy, whereas the Yamaha FZ-S Fi V3 feels quite chill in everyday scenarios. On the highway, the Pulsar N150 will be able to hold on to higher speeds better.

Bajaj reintroduced the Pulsar N150 in 2024 with a new rear disc brake unit (read variant), that is shared with the Pulsar N160. Aside from that the rest of the bike continues unchanged. The difference in tyre profile makes the Yamaha appear bulkier than the Bajaj Pulsar N150.

Despite its bulkier looks, the Yamaha FZ-S Fi weighs 11 kg less than the Bajaj Pulsar N150. Some limitations have popped up in the way while trying to achieve this advantage. For instance, the fuel tank is 1 litre smaller hidden underneath that massive bulky fuel tank design. The Pulsar N150 looks athletic in comparison, and yet it is the heavier option here. Both also have the same seat height and ground clearance. Ergonomics feels slightly sportier in the Pulsar N150, without compromising on the comfortable upright stance. The same in the Yamaha is comfortable and upright throughout.

Moreover, the Bajaj Pulsar N150 is now also available with an all-new digital instrument cluster. The base-spec model with this cluster is now priced at ₹1.24 lakh (from ₹1.17 lakh). The top-spec models add Bluetooth connectivity for accept/reject calls, notification alerts, ride logs, etc; and a rear disc brake into the mix. This variant with all the bells and whistles is priced at ₹1.31 lakh.

The Yamaha FZ-S Fi V3 starts from ₹1.16 lakh with the new Matte Cyan Shade option in 2024. With the Matte Grey option, the cost price will increase to ₹1.22 lakh.

Conclusion

Both the Yamaha FZ-S Fi V3 and Bajaj Pulsar N150 are on par in terms of the features on offer. Both get an all-digital instrument cluster with Bluetooth connectivity, single-channel ABS, and alloy wheels. However, with a paunchier engine and a more contemporary design package, the Bajaj Pulsar N150 feels relevant and modern. The Yamaha FZ-S Fi V3 does look dated, and the mellow tune of the engine lacks excitement. Both also deliver a similar hassle-free ownership experience - so if you have to choose either of the two, all you have to choose is whether you want a bit of spiritedness or calmness during your commutes.
