Qualcomm, Ericsson and Bharti Airtel have announced that they have successfully demonstrated Reduced Capability (RedCap) device capabilities on Airtel's 5G network in India. It marks the first time RedCap has been implemented and validated in the country.
The companies utilized Qualcomm's Snapdragon X35 5G Modem-RF System and Ericsson's RedCap software to showcase the capabilities during a demo at the India Mobile Congress 2023 in Delhi. RedCap allows for the developing of more affordable and power-efficient 5G devices optimized for mid-tier use cases.
RedCap is a RAN (radio access network) software solution designed to serve 5G use cases currently underserved by existing 5G technology. It supports higher speeds and capacity than 4G LTE, reducing complexity for more cost-efficient devices with smaller form factors, lower power consumption and longer battery life.
Qualcomm, along with Ericsson and Airtel, have been working closely with companies in India to advance 5G network and device capabilities.
