Renault’s Emblème claims to cut carbon footprint by 90% using a lifecycle design and dual-energy system.

Renault Group has introduced the Emblème, a concept family car designed to slash its carbon footprint by 90% compared to the company’s 2019 Captur gasoline model, reducing emissions from around 50 tonnes to just 5 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent.

As per the French company, this marks a shift from mid-term sustainability goals to operational reality.

Lifecycle Approach

The Emblème embodies a “cradle-to-grave” strategy, rethinking every stage from raw material extraction to recycling.

It uses lighter, recycled materials, minimal-dye textiles in four circular tones, and an aerodynamic design to cut weight and seams, ensuring emissions reduction without compromising comfort or versatility.

“Emblème is a way of proving that ambitious decarbonization targets can be turned into reality”, said Clea Martinet, VP Sustainability at Renault Group.

Powered by a dual-energy electric system, the Emblème features a 40 kWh NMC battery for daily use and a hydrogen fuel cell for longer trips, offering a 1,000 km range with two five-minute refuelling stops. This avoids the high carbon cost of larger batteries, balancing efficiency and performance.

The project involved over 20 partners, including steelmakers, battery experts, and textile engineers, fostering a collective approach to net-zero solutions.

As per Renault, despite initial setbacks and trials, this collaboration yielded scalable innovations, challenging the industry’s siloed practices.

Environmental Targets

Renault aims to cut CO₂ emissions by 27.5% by 2030, achieve net zero in Europe by 2040, and globally by 2050. The Emblème serves as a test platform to validate decarbonisation strategies, bridging the gap between ambitious targets and practical execution.

This development could push automakers to adopt lifecycle-focused designs, influencing global standards.

As electrification alone falls short of climate goals, Emblème’s approach may inspire broader systemic changes, though its real-world scalability remains under scrutiny.
