Why This Change Matters for Renault India

India has long been a promising yet challenging market for global automakers. While Renault found initial success with mass-market models like the Duster, Kwid and Triber, recent years have seen a stagnation in volumes and a lack of new model launches, compounded by growing competition and regulatory headwinds.

The appointment of Stephane Deblaise, an executive with deep international experience and a track record of strategic transformations, could signal a broader reset for Renault’s India strategy.

His most recent stint as CEO of Renault Korea saw him lead critical restructuring efforts, modernise the Busan plant, and reposition the Korean subsidiary as a global hub for mid-to-large segment vehicles. This international success will be crucial as Renault India navigates a complex mid-term roadmap involving EV localisation, export diversification, and alliance synergies with Nissan.

Venkatram Mamillapalle To Continue As Managing Director

Venkatram Mamillapalle, who has served as the Managing Director of Renault India Private Limited (RIPL) since 2019, will continue in his current role and now support Deblaise on corporate affairs. His tenure saw the company stabilise its Indian operations, optimise its dealer network, and maintain profitability during a volatile post-COVID recovery. However, critics argue that during his leadership, the company failed to capitalise on the momentum from models like the Kwid, with a slowdown in product pipeline and innovation, something Deblaise is likely expected to address head-on.

Deblaise’s Experience and What It Could Mean for India

Deblaise joined Renault in 2000 and has since held leadership roles across geographies, including China, Latin America, and France, focusing on product planning, entry-segment programs, and global vehicle strategy. His engineering background and cross-functional exposure could bring a more agile and globally integrated approach to Renault India’s future products.

What’s Next for Renault in India?

Renault’s aggressive India push, marked by a 100% takeover of RNAIPL, a new design centre, and five upcoming launches, signals a strategic shift to reclaim relevance in a fast-evolving market. The new-gen Triber and Kiger will refresh the entry space, but the real focus is on the next-gen Duster and Bigster. These will target the B+ and C-SUV segments, which are witnessing the sharpest growth in India.

By offering hybrid, ICE, CNG, and EV options, Renault is mirroring rivals like Hyundai, Maruti, Mahindra, and MG, all of whom are stacking up offerings in the ₹17–25 lakh bracket. While an entry-level EV like the Kwid (Spring) was expected, Renault is instead eyeing a more premium EV, aligning it against the Hyundai Creta Electric, Mahindra BE 6, Maruti Suzuki e Vitara and the recently launched Kia Carens Clavis EV.
