Global NCAP crash-tested the Triber under its Safer Cars for Africa programme.

The made-in-India Renault Triber has scored poorly in the latest round of crash tests by global safety watchdog, Global NCAP. The MPV was tested under Global NCAP’s Safer Cars For Africa programme. Like the Suzuki Ertiga, this is the second outing at Global NCAP for the Renault MPV. It secured a four-star rating in 2021 but it was under the older protocols.

In the adult occupant protection tests, the Triber scored 22.29 points out of 34. In the frontal offset deformable barrier test, it received good head and neck protection for the front occupants and scored 9.736 points. While the chest of the passenger received adequate protection, the driver's chest only scored weak protection. In the side movable deformable barrier test it received 12.555 points with good head protection but weak chest protection. No side pole impact test was conducted as the Triber only gets two airbags. The body shell of the Triber was rated as unstable and it is not capable of withstanding further loadings.

In the child occupant protection tests, Renault’s MPV scored 19.99 points out of a possible 49. It received a dynamic score of 17.04 out of 24, 2.95 points out of 12 for the child restraint system (CRS) installation and nil out of 13 for the vehicle assessment score. 18-month-old and 3-year-old children's dummies were used by Global NCAP for child safety tests. The safety watchdog commented that both CRSs offered full side impact protection.

Acko Drive has reached out to Renault India regarding a comment on the result from Global NCAP’s crash test. The story will be updated when we receive a comment from the manufacturer.

The Renault Triber is built in India and is exported to the African nation. The Triber was introduced in South Africa in 2020 and comes with the same 1.0-litre petrol engine as the India-spec model. It produces 70 bhp and 96 Nm and comes paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT.
