The new Shotgun 650 is one of the most expensive motorcycles in Royal Enfield’s portfolio.
The Royal Enfield Shotgun 650 is the fourth iteration of the brand’s popular 650 twins platform and probably the most niche product of them all. With several exciting customisation options on offer, the Shotgun 650 is a brave attempt to lure in customers to a hardly-existing bobber market. However, its starting price of ₹3.60 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) is one hard pill to swallow, especially when you take into account the number of other exciting motorcycles that you can buy in this price range.
If you’re determined to own a low-slung 650 cc Royal Enfield bike, the Super Meteor 650 is a strong alternative. It's a cruiser bike designed for long-distance touring and for that purpose, RE also offers touring seats that fit appropriately with the whole bike’s aesthetic.
The Shotgun 650 is powered by the 650 cc parallel-twin engine with the same 46.8 bhp and 52.3 Nm. We have loved this engine for the wave of torque it delivers, coupled with that 270-degree crank, it sounds incredible too. However, you can have the same package with the Interceptor 650, and that too at a much more affordable starting price of ₹3.03 lakh. The last new addition of the alloy wheel version further makes this roadster a sensible option, and in turn a better VFM product compared to the SG 650.
ADVs or adventure motorcycles are apt for our diverse pothole-ridden roads and the KTM 390 Adventure has been a resounding success in that regard. Right from its performance-oriented 373.33 cc engine to the different variants on offer, KTM has everyone covered. But our choice is the top-spec 390 Adventure. It comes fitted with spoke wheels shodded with Metzeler Tourance dual-purpose tyres as standard, making it great to explore unchartered territories without the fear of cracking your alloy wheels.
Additionally, it is also the only 390 Adventure variant to come with suspension components that have a lot more room for adjustability at both ends. And at ₹3.61 lakh, the 390 Adventure is not just priced similarly to the Shotgun 650, it is also much more capable in almost all regards than the bobber.
Another adventure motorcycle with top-notch build quality is the BMW G 310 GS. Although not as capable and performance-oriented as the 390 Adventure, the BMW G 310 GS with its commanding posture, plush seats, and wide handlebar is a good highway tourer. These characteristics do make the BMW G 310 GS a nice alternative to the Royal Enfield Shotgun 650’s price range. And if you want to have a BMW bike in your garage, the G 310 GS makes the choice a very wise one.
The newly launched Aprilia RS 457 at ₹4.10 lakh should be right up at the top of your list if you are looking at something sporty. It looks premium, and comes with a healthy list of features (three ride modes, and three levels of traction control).
Coupled with that brand spanking new 457 cc twin-cylinder engine nestled within that RSV4-inspired aluminium twin-spar frame, the RS 457 is quick, agile, and a great sport bike. Despite being built in Baramati, Pune, the Noale gene is still intact in the RS 457. The fully digital instrument console also gets you a plethora of connectivity features, from accept/reject calls to music controls and turn-by-turn navigation. The SG 650 in this regard is nowhere close to the Aprilia RS 457 as a wholesome package.
