Samsung XR headset is said to be unveiled at an 'Unpacked' product launch event in the second half of 2024.
Samsung is reportedly targeting a late 2024 launch for its first extended reality (XR) headset, following its partnerships with technology giants Google and Qualcomm. The XR headset is said to be unveiled at an 'Unpacked' product launch event in the second half of 2024.
Code-named "Infinite", Samsung's mixed reality headset aims to compete in the growing XR device market led by offerings from Apple, Meta and other players. The XR market, which encompasses technologies like virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality, is expected to reach $151.58 billion globally by 2026, according to analysts.
Samsung's Infinite XR headset rumoured launch date in H2 2024 places it roughly a year after Apple unveiled its high-end Vision Pro XR headset, slated for commercial release in early 2024.
The report states that the initial production quantity for the Samsung Infinite headset is set at 30,000 units. To power the device, Samsung has partnered with Google to develop a specialized Android operating system and Qualcomm to integrate its Snapdragon chip. The headset display will utilize Samsung's patented OLEDoS technology, like the Vision Pro, to attach OLED materials to silicon wafers for enhanced clarity.
While Samsung dabbled in VR before with Gear VR and Odyssey Plus, the Infinite could represent a serious opportunity to carve a leadership position in the era of XR computing.
