Could HVO be the alternative to diesel after even stricter emission norms?
In a significant push towards reducing emissions from diesel vehicles, Skoda Ireland and fuel supplier Certa, have joined forces to promote the use of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) as a greener alternative to traditional diesel.
HVO is a renewable fuel made from recycled vegetable oils. The company says that this fuel offers a 90% net reduction in CO2 emissions which is a compelling advantage over conventional diesel. This partnership aims to encourage both existing owners and new buyers of diesel cars to consider HVO as a more sustainable option.
HVO is seen as a viable transition fuel for these individuals, offering a cleaner alternative until they can fully switch to EVs.
Currently, HVO availability in Ireland is limited, with Certa offering the fuel at only three fuel stations. However, they have ambitious plans to expand to ten locations by the end of 2024, with the ultimate goal of providing HVO at all 41 of their stations nationwide.

To incentivise the switch, Skoda Ireland is offering vouchers worth €250 (₹26,314) or €500 (₹44977) to buyers of new diesel models, depending on the car purchased, allowing them to experience the benefits of HVO firsthand.
It's important to note that HVO is not just limited to Ireland. It's also gaining traction in other regions like Europe, with countries like Finland, Sweden, and Norway having readily available HVO at gas stations. While not as widespread, HVO is also being explored in other regions like the United States and Canada.

Beyond Skoda and Certa, other car manufacturers, fuel suppliers, and even the logistics industry are exploring HVO. While HVO is not a long-term solution, it offers a valuable bridge towards a more sustainable future, especially for those who are unable to switch to electric cars immediately.
