Skoda Auto India has officially introduced the Kylaq, a new contender in the highly competitive subcompact SUV segment, where it faces well-established models like the Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Mahindra XUV 3XO, Tata Nexon, and Maruti Suzuki Brezza. Following earlier prototype tests, we now have the complete details on the Kylaq, allowing a closer look at its specifications, features, and how it stacks up against rivals in this crowded market.

Dimensions and Interior Space

The Skoda Kylaq’s design closely resembles its sibling, the Kushaq, but with a more compact wheelbase. At 3995 mm in length and a wheelbase of 2566 mm, it is slightly shorter in wheelbase than the Kushaq by 81 mm. Among its competitors, the Mahindra XUV 3XO has a marginally shorter overall length of 3990 mm but a longer wheelbase of 2600 mm, which could mean more legroom. The Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, and Tata Nexon all match the Kylaq’s length at 3995 mm but come with shorter wheelbases – 2500 mm for the Venue and Sonet, and 2498 mm for the Nexon. Similarly, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza mirrors the Kylaq’s 3995 mm length but shares the Venue and Sonet’s 2500 mm wheelbase.

With the longest wheelbase among these models, the Kylaq could offer a roomier cabin, especially for rear-seat passengers, an appealing aspect for families and those prioritizing interior space.

Powertrains and Performance Options

The Kylaq is powered by a single engine option, a 1.0-litre TSI turbocharged petrol engine producing 114 bhp and 178 Nm of torque. This engine, which also powers the Kushaq and Slavia, is available with either a 6-speed manual or a torque converter automatic transmission.

In comparison, the Mahindra XUV 3XO stands out with its variety of engine options, including a turbo petrol offered in two power outputs (110 bhp and 129 bhp) and a diesel engine. Both the Hyundai Venue and Kia Sonet offer three engines – a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol, a 1.0-litre turbo petrol producing 118 bhp, and a 1.5-litre diesel. The Venue and Sonet also offer a 7-speed DCT on the turbo petrol, an option missing in the Kylaq.

The Tata Nexon similarly provides a range of powertrains, with a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine producing 118 bhp and a 1.5-litre diesel engine. Nexon’s turbo petrol variant offers multiple transmission options, including a manual, AMT, and DCT automatic. Maruti Suzuki Brezza, meanwhile, is powered solely by a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 102 bhp, paired with a manual or 6-speed automatic transmission.

Feature Comparison

Skoda has equipped the Kylaq with a range of practical features, including 6-way electrically adjustable and ventilated front seats, a wireless phone charger, boot hooks, a smartphone pocket, a ticket holder, and reflective tape on the doors. These features enhance the Kylaq’s convenience, though it lacks certain advanced offerings available in other models.

Kia Sonet Facelift
The Sonet is the best-selling model in Kia's line-up.

The Mahindra XUV 3XO comes with ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), a feature not offered on the Kylaq. The Hyundai Venue provides a dashcam, while the Maruti Suzuki Brezza includes a unique HUD (Head-Up Display), which is absent on the Kylaq. All models, including the Kylaq, come with competitive features such as a sunroof, digital instrument clusters, LED headlights with DRLs, infotainment systems with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and automatic climate control.
