India's premium SUV market gets a strategic addition as Czech automaker introduces compact family-focused variant with reduced seating capacity
Skoda Auto India has quietly introduced the Kodiaq Lounge, a new 5-seater variant of its flagship SUV, priced at ₹39.99 lakh (ex-showroom), marking a significant ₹6 lakh reduction from the 7-seater variants. The new Lounge variant positions itself as an affordable entry point into the Kodiaq lineup, undercutting both the Sportline (₹43.76 lakh) and Selection L&K (₹45.95 lakh) variants whilst maintaining the SUV's core premium appeal.
The Kodiaq Lounge emerges as a strategic play to capture buyers seeking a more compact luxury SUV without the complexity of third-row seating. Unlike its 7-seater siblings, the Lounge variant accommodates five passengers in enhanced comfort, featuring Grey Suedia and Fabric trim interiors that offer a sophisticated yet practical cabin environment.
Under the bonnet, the Lounge maintains mechanical parity with higher variants, powered by the same 2.0-litre TSI petrol engine producing 201 bhp and 320 Nm of torque. The powertrain comes mated to a 7-speed DSG automatic transmission and standard 4x4 drive system, ensuring the variant doesn't compromise on performance credentials despite its positioning as the entry-level option.
Feature differentiation becomes apparent in the technology and comfort departments. The Lounge variant gets a smaller 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system compared to the 12.9-inch unit in Sportline and Selection L&K variants. However, it retains essential premium features including the sliding panoramic sunroof, 10.25-inch Virtual Cockpit, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and Smart Dials for multiple function control.
The safety package remains comprehensive across all variants, with the Lounge receiving the same 9 airbags and host of driving stability systems as its pricier counterparts. This ensures buyers don't compromise on protection despite opting for the most affordable variant.
Exterior styling follows the Kodiaq's design language with matte Unique Dark Chrome styling elements and R18 Mazeno alloy wheels. The variant maintains the SUV's commanding road presence whilst omitting some premium touches reserved for higher trims.
Market positioning puts the Kodiaq Lounge in direct competition with other premium 5-seater SUVs like the VW Tiguan, BMW X1 or even the Mercedes-Benz GLA,
The timing coincides with growing consumer preference for 5-seater configurations in the premium segment, where buyers often prioritise boot space and passenger comfort over additional seating capacity. With 281 litres of boot space expanding to 786 litres with rear seats folded, the Lounge offers practical versatility.
The variant's arrival strengthens the Kodiaq's position against rivals whilst offering buyers a more focused luxury SUV experience.
The Kodiaq Lounge is available across Skoda's dealer network nationwide, with the brand offering its standard 5-year warranty, 1-year Supercare package, and 10-year roadside assistance across all variants.
