Sony has said it is testing PC game support for its PlayStation VR2 headset, potentially opening up a huge new value proposition. The PS VR2 headset is currently tied to the PlayStation 5 console, and only some games can take advantage of it. That puts it in niche territory, especially since it costs more than the PS5 console itself. Expanding to PC games will give buyers more reasons to invest. As PlayStation console sales dip from a previously forecasted 25 million to the recently revised projection of 21 million this fiscal year, Sony could also be hoping to reassure buyers who expect the PS5 console to become outdated within a few years that their investment will continue to be useful.
The news comes via a minor note in a Sony Playstation blog post, in which the company announced new and upcoming PS VR2 games including Zombie Army VR, Little Cities: Bigger, and Soul Covenant. After touting the platform’s strength and variety of games, the post states: “Also, we’re pleased to share that we are currently testing the ability for PS VR2 players to access additional games on PC to offer even more game variety in addition to the PS VR2 titles available through PS5. We hope to make this support available in 2024, so stay tuned for more updates.”
Sony has not clarified which games or platforms the PS VR2 will support on PC, although the potential is huge. There’s also no mention of whether current PS VR exclusive games will be coming to PC, in the same vein as Microsoft recently announcing it will be releasing some of its former exclusives for the PlayStation 5. According to top Xbox gaming executives, platform exclusives will decline in importance over the next few years.
The PS VR2 headset is officially priced at Rs. 57,990 in India, and is also often available with game bundles priced slightly higher. It offers a 360-degree field of view thanks to its dual 2000x2040-pixel 120Hz HDR OLED screens. It also supports eye tracking, a see-through mode that lets you blend your surroundings with content on-screen, precise controller tracking, and a Cinematic Mode for enjoying video content. Users get immersive 3D audio and built-in microphones, haptic feedback and a ventilation system, plus accelerometer and gyroscope sensors. The accompanying PlayStation Camera lets gamers broadcast themselves.
Games that currently support or are exclusive to the PS VR2 include Resident Evil Village, Beat Saber, Gran Turismo 7, Stranger Things VR, The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners, No Man’s Sky, Paper Beast, and Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge.
The PlayStation 5 was released in late 2020 and is expected to be replaced in late 2026 at the earliest, though some predictions peg the next-generation console launch in 2028. A mid-cycle PS5 Pro, with updated specifications, has also been rumoured to be planned for the end of this year or early next year. In the meanwhile, high-profile upcoming games, most notably GTA VI, should also give console sales a boost.
