PlayStation 5 Pro is rumoured to feature a robust GPU that could be up to three times faster than the current model.
Sony is said to be working on a significant upgrade for the PlayStation 5 (PS5) console known as the PlayStation 5 Pro, which is rumoured to feature a robust GPU that could be up to three times faster than the current model. The initial report came from YouTuber Moore’s Law Is Dead, who cited information from confidential technical documents. This information was later corroborated by Tom Henderson from Insider Gaming, who revealed that the project is internally referred to as Trinity and is expected to be released in the latter part of 2024.
Reports suggest that this new console could boast 67 teraflops of 16-bit floating-point calculations, equivalent to 33.5 teraflops of single-precision compute, resulting in a significant 45% improvement in rendering performance compared to the PS5. While the PS5 currently operates at 10.28 teraflops, the comparison is complicated by AMD's altered RDNA architecture. Based on the latest data, the PS5 Pro is projected to deliver around 17 teraflops of compute power, nearly doubling the performance.
Sony appears to be transitioning from an AMD Radeon RX 6700 GPU to a Radeon RX 7800 XT, potentially resulting in a threefold increase in ray tracing performance, if not more. The console is also expected to undergo a visual redesign in line with the most recent PS5 update. System memory may receive a boost to 576 GB/s, marking a 28% improvement over the previous model, along with enhanced audio hardware. Additionally, there could be a high-frequency variant with a clock speed increase to 3.85GHz.
Leaked documents mention spectral super resolution, which could be Sony's solution for AI-driven upscaling akin to Nvidia's DLSS and AMD's FSR, potentially enabling features like 8K upscaling and improved ray tracing capabilities.
The PS5 Pro is rumoured to hit the market in November 2024, precisely four years after the launch of the original PS5.
