A new electric vehicle (EV) charging facility in Thakurpukur, South Kolkata is set to become India's largest single-location EV charging centre, according to Ashhok Kapoor, Managing Director of EzUrja, the company constructing the facility, says a new report by EV Mechanica. The hub will feature 300 chargers, making it the second-largest in the world only after China's largest facility, which has 650 chargers.
The charging centre will be built on nearly two acres of land where PSU Andrew Yule & Co.'s factory once operated. "This is our inaugural EV charging hub project. It is being developed for 300 vehicles of Snap-E, all-electric cab service app. The biggest single-location EV charging hub in India till date is in Gurgaon, and it has 160 charging stations," Kapoor was quoted as saying.
The project, estimated to cost Rs 7.5 crore, is expected to be operational before Durga Puja in August.
"Andrew Yule has given the land on a commercial deal," Kapoor added.
According to Kapoor, all chargers are being manufactured locally at EzUrja's facility in Himachal Pradesh. "The hub will include a blend of fast and slow chargers, with loads of up to 120 kwh capacity. The fast chargers will account for around 20 per cent of total," he explained.
The charging centre will have a maximum capacity of 6 megawatts and will incorporate solar panels and battery banks for sustainability. "We anticipate to produce around 40 per cent of the load from the microgrid that we are building at the location to provide a green and sustainable energy supply," Kapoor noted.
Mayank Bindal, CEO of Snap-E, described the joint venture (JV) as a benchmark for building robust e-mobility infrastructure throughout India.
Beyond the Kolkata hub, EzUrja is expanding its EV charging infrastructure along the 250-kilometer Kolkata-Asansol highway. The company plans to establish 10 EV charging stations with 240 kwh capacity for electric buses in partnership with the state power department for interstate operations.
"The state power department will provide land at its substations on the highway," Kapoor said. He also mentioned that the company is considering developing another EV charging station within Kolkata.
