Stellantis is bringing back the SRT division, the performance department. The group’s North American division has appointed Tim Kuniskis as the head of the American brands and will play a key role in bringing back the SRT performance division.
The Street and Racing Technology (SRT) division builds high-performance versions of the cars from Jeep, Dodge, Ram and Chrysler. Kuniskis said, “SRT is another box we needed to check as we head into a product launch cadence enabling more performance than we’ve ever seen before.” Ram brand and SRT division will be led by Kuniskis.
This comes at a time when Stellantis announced that it will resume production of its V8 engines, particularly in the Hemi line-up. The new Hemi will be a 5.7-litre V8 engine that will debut with the Ram 1500 pick-up truck and will produce 395 bhp and 556 Nm, while also including features like variable camshaft timing and cylinder deactivation.
Stellantis says the SRT division will deliver vehicles “that push the boundaries of power, aerodynamics, handling and technology, on both the street and the track.” Stellantis also said that the SRT division will cater to enthusiasts primarily, ensuring that they get the “power, precision and passion” they want.
In India, Stellantis sold the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT between 2016 and 2020. It seems unlikely that the SRT badge will make a comeback on cars in India, but it will be lovely to see the SRT on Jeep models sold in India.
