Stellantis has begun real-world testing of a new electric vehicle battery system that promises faster charging and better efficiency. The technology, called the Intelligent Battery Integrated System (IBIS), has been developed in partnership with Saft, a TotalEnergies company.

A New Approach to EV Batteries

Unlike traditional setups, which use separate parts to charge the battery and power the motor, IBIS combines these functions directly inside the battery. Stellantis says this makes the vehicle lighter, simpler, and more efficient to run.

Gains Seen in Testing

The first prototype, a Peugeot E-3008 SUV built on Stellantis’ STLA Medium platform, has shown encouraging results:

  • Charging time reduced by one hour, from seven to six hours on a 7 kW charger.
  • Energy use improved by up to 10 per cent in standard tests.
  • Power output increased by 15 per cent, from 150 kW to 172 kW.
  • Weight reduced by 40 kg, with an additional 17 litres of space freed up.
  • Simpler servicing and better potential for second-life use in other applications.

Road Ahead

The IBIS project has been in development for six years with contributions from Stellantis, Saft, and engineering partners, including E2-CAD and Sherpa Engineering, along with academic support from CNRS and Université Paris-Saclay. Phase 2 of the programme, launched in June 2025, is focused on road testing under real-world conditions. Stellantis aims to introduce the technology in production vehicles before 2030.

Wider Applications

Beyond cars, the company sees potential for IBIS technology in rail, marine, aerospace, data centres, and stationary energy storage systems, highlighting its broader role in the shift towards clean and cost-efficient electrification.
