More than 50 per cent of the cars sold by Hyundai and Honda have a sunroof.
Indians love sunroofs, that’s for sure, as time and again we see reports of demand for sunroofs increasing. Acko Drive reached out to various mass-market manufacturers to understand this trend, and data received from Honda Cars India and Hyundai Motor India Limited indicates this increasing demand, but other manufacturers like Tata Motors, Mahindra Auto and Maruti Suzuki are yet to provide this data.
It’s been well established that the demand for sunroofs, either single-pane or panoramic, is on the rise in India. That’s despite the majority of the country witnessing a hot climate, where the sunroof makes little sense due to the heat it attracts into the cabin. Still, Indians seem to demand this feature as it gives their cars a sense of luxury and premiumness.
Earlier, the sunroof used to be limited to the topmost trim, but the demand for this feature has increased so much that manufacturers are now offering it even in mid-spec variants. Even if you see cars from brands like Hyundai, Mahindra, Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki and Honda, the sunroof is generally available from mid-spec variants onwards, sometimes even from lower-spec variants too.
The most affordable car in India with a sunroof is the Tata Punch with its Adventure Sunroof MT variant priced at ₹7.72 lakh (ex-showroom, India). The most affordable car with a panoramic sunroof is the Kia Syros with its HTK+ turbo-petrol MT variant which is priced at ₹11.80 lakh (ex-showroom, India).
Hyundai India has sold more than 11 lakh sunroof-equipped vehicles in the country over the past five years. Out of the 11 cars it sells right now, only two don’t get a sunroof in any of the variants. While it was 52 per cent of Hyundai’s total domestic sales in 2024, it has risen to 54 per cent in the first half (January to June) of 2025.
Generally, Hyundai offers the option of the sunroof from the mid-spec variant onwards, but cars like the Exter and Venue even have it from the second-from-base variant onwards.
The Honda Elevate and City are the only models that get a sunroof, and it is also only available on the top two trims – VX and ZX. These trims contribute to 75 per cent of the Elevate’s total domestic sales, while contributing to 60 per cent of the City’s total domestic sales.
The data from Honda and Hyundai shows that a majority of people prefer to get a higher-spec variant because it offers more features, hence becoming more value for money. This indicates a shift in trend in the industry which earlier bought more lower- and mid-spec variants but now buys mid- and top-spec variants more.
