Suzuki has filed patents for this technology that will be used in its small capacity bikes.
Recent patents filings by Suzuki have revealed that the brand is working on introducing Variable Valve Timing (VVT) on its small capacity bikes. Suzuki developed the technology when it was in MotoGP and it paid dividends on bikes like the GSX-R1000R. While those were performance-oriented complicated mechanisms, the new VVT patent for its small bikes here looks simpler and more conventional. The patent showcases a single-overhead camshaft with a four-valve engine, with variable valve gear that can be adjusted by a hydraulic actuator.
Suzuki’s decision to introduce VVT on smaller capacity bikes might make incredible sense as the emission norms worldwide are getting more and more stringent. And not to lose out on either fuel efficiency or performance, the technology will have its benefits. The patent filings have revealed that both the Suzuki V-Strom 250 and the SX250R will be gaining this technology. However, the V-Strom 250 mentioned here is not the same as the V-Strom 250 SX that is sold in India.

The V-Strom 250 is built on a completely different platform that can be traced back to the twin-cylinder Inazuma 250, which was sold in India. The V-Strom SX is completely different, powered by the same 249 cc single-cylinder oil-cooled engine that also powers the Gixxer 250 and Gixxer SF 250.

Even if Suzuki manages to employ this newly patented VVT technology to its small capacity bikes in India, it won’t be the first time we see the tech. Yamaha had introduced the same eons ago on its 155 cc engine platform with the R15 V3 at first and then followed it up with successive versions of the sport bike, the MT-15 and even the Aerox 155.
