Tarun Garg has officially taken charge as Hyundai Motor India’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, starting from January 1, 2026. Tarun Garg has created history, becoming the first Indian to hold the leadership position at Hyundai India, since the brand made its foray into the market in 1997. The industry veteran brings over 32 years of experience in the Indian auto sector having previously worked with Maruti Suzuki. Tarun Garg was awarded the 2026 Person of the Year at the recently concluded ACKO Drive Awards 2026.
Tarun Garg has been elevated as MD & CEO at Hyundai, having spent six years with the company as Whole-time Director & COO. He has worked across sales, marketing, distribution, financial management, product strategy and brand communication. Garg’s appointment comes at a pivotal point for the automaker, having announced a Rs 45,000 crore investment roadmap in its second phase of growth in the country.
Speaking about the new chapter in his career, Tarun Garg, MD & CEO - HMIL said, “India’s automotive industry is at an exciting inflection point, driven by innovation, sustainability and evolving customer aspirations. Under his leadership, Hyundai is now looking to secure a 15 per cent market share in the Indian passenger vehicle market by FY2030. The brand has 26 new models lined up for launch by the end of this decade with EVs, hybrids, connected mobility, and more, part of the Rs 45,000 crore investment roadmap announced. The company will also work on strengthening its dealer and supplier networks, and further improve the experience across its touchpoints.
HMIL delivered record-breaking sales for three consecutive years with Garg at the helm, delivering highest-ever profitability and EBITDA margins, and executing the largest IPO in the history of Indian equity markets in 2024. He also envisioned the “Samarth by Hyundai” initiative, aiming to raise awareness and accessibility for people with disabilities in India.
Prior to Hyundai, Tarun Garg spent 25 years at Maruti Suzuki taking up several roles, serving as the Executive Director of Marketing, Logistics, Parts & Accessories. The leader has completed his Mechanical Engineering from the Delhi Technological University, is an alumni from IIM Lucknow.
