JLR and Tata Motors have plans to manufacture EVs at the latter’s new plant in Ranipet, Tamil Nadu.
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has reportedly shelved plans to build electric vehicles at parent company Tata Motors’ new plant in Ranipet, Tamil Nadu, four people with the knowledge told Reuters. However, Tata Motors has denied such claims.
As per the report, JLR is unable to find equilibrium between price and quality for locally sourced EV parts, which highlights that this decision indicates a decreasing demand for electric cars. When Acko Drive reached out to Tata Motors, the Indian auto giant replied that the new facility will be “a world-class, greenfield production facility for manufacturing next-gen cars and SUVs for both Tata Motors and JLR. Designed for an annual production capacity of over 250,000 vehicles, the vehicles made at the facility will be sold in both Indian and international markets.”
Tata Motors added that peak production capacity will be achieved over the next 5-7 years, and “specific models and production timelines will be aligned with TPEM (Tata Passenger Electric Mobility) and JLR’s broader strategy and market requirements while ensuring world-class quality and efficiency.”
However, a supplier source told Reuters that “for India, all the work (on JLR electric vehicles) has stopped. Everything has been suspended since about two months.” JLR’s decision is also likely to affect Tata Motors’ plans with the Avinya line-up, its range of luxury models. Tata Motors denied this by saying the plan for Avinya remains unchanged and the first model will launch in the Financial Year 2026-27.
