The two Tata Motors SUVs are the first vehicles to be tested by Bharat NCAP.
The first round of Bharat New Car Assessment Programme’s (NCAP) safety tests has concluded and we finally have the results in! Bharat NCAP tested the Tata Safari and Harrier SUVs and both have received a 5-star rating. This falls in line with the Global NCAP results for both SUVs as they were the highest-scoring vehicles with a 5-star rating. Bharat NCAP tested the Adventure+ variant of the Tata Safari.
Nitin Gadkari, Minister for Road Transport and Highways, said, “I’m delighted that the first ever vehicles being certified today with the highest achievable 5-star rating, are both from Tata Motors. I congratulate them on the award of this coveted certification with the highest possible ratings and for continuing to enrich their legacy of introducing the safest vehicles on Indian roads.”
The Tata Safari and Harrier have been awarded 5-star ratings in both adult and child occupant protection tests. In the adult occupant protection tests, both SUVs scored 30.08 points out of a total of 32 points. In Global NCAP’s adult occupant protection tests, the Safari and Harrier were awarded 33.05 points out of 34 points.
In the frontal offset deformable barrier test, Bharat NCAP notes that the driver has ‘good protection’ for the head, thighs, pelvis, feet and left calf. However, the driver only gets ‘marginal protection’ for the chest, while the right calf gets ‘adequate protection’. In Global NCAP, apart from the chest and calves, which got ‘adequate protection’, all other body parts had ‘good protection’ ratings. For the passenger, Bharat NCAP rates all body parts with ‘good protection’, while Global NCAP rated the passenger’s chest as adequate.
For the side movable barrier tests, the Safari and Harrier received ‘good protection’ ratings from Bharat NCAP and Global NCAP. Furthermore, in the side impact pole test, both agencies gave an ‘OK’ rating. While Bharat NCAP gave a ‘good protection’ rating for the entire body, Global NCAP gave ‘marginal protection’ and ‘adequate protection’ ratings for the chest and pelvis, respectively.
In the child occupant protection tests, the Safari and Harrier scored 44.54 points out of a total of 49. Both SUVs got a dynamic score of 23.54 points out of 24, a CRS installation score of 12 points out of 12, and a vehicle assessment score of 9 points out of 13. Compared to Global NCAP’s scores, the Safari and Harrier got a dynamic score of 24 points out of 24, with the other two being identical.
Bharat NCAP also used dummies of an 18-month-old and a 3-year-old child, both facing rearwards. Both were placed in the vehicles using i-size anchorages and a support leg. These factors are the same as Global NCAP’s tests.
Interestingly, the weights of the two SUVs mentioned by the two agencies differ. Bharat NCAP mentions the gross vehicle weight of the tested model as 2126 kg, whereas Global NCAP mentions it to be 2119 kg. However, this is because Bharat NCAP tested the top-spec Adventure+ variant, while Global NCAP tested the base-spec Pure variant.
