The addition of petrol powertrain to Tata Harrier and Safari will not only lower entry-level prices but also make the SUV duos more competitive against their rivals.
While the new-gen Sierra, slated to break cover on November 25, may be the centre of attraction for Tata Motors at this point of time, the company is gearing up for another big development that is slated to take place next month. The company will launch petrol-powered versions of Harrier and Safari on 9 December 2025.
The petrol-powered Harrier and Safari have been in development for many years now. Test mules of the former have been spotted on numerous occasions over the last couple of years. The upcoming petrol variants of the two mid-size SUVs will be powered by a 1.5-litre TGDi (turbocharged, direct injection) motor under the 'Hyperion' series of engines which made its debut at Auto Expo 2025.
Built from lightweight aluminium, the new TGDi engine promises enhanced refinement and improved fuel efficiency. It incorporates advanced technologies such as a water-cooled variable geometry turbocharger, variable valve timing, and an integrated exhaust manifold. Transmission options will include both manual and automatic gearboxes.

The new turbocharged petrol mill delivers 168 bhp at 5,000rpm and a peak torque of 280Nm of torque between 2,000rpm – 3,500rpm. More importantly, this new engine will comply with the BS6 phase II as well as E20 norms. Both manual and automatic gearbox options are expected to be available, though the specific type of automatic transmission — whether a torque converter or a dual-clutch unit — has yet to be confirmed.
Interestingly, Jeep is also expected to source Tata’s 1.5-litre turbo-petrol for the upcoming Compass and Meridian models. More details regarding this powertrain will be available when it makes its debut in the new-gen Sierra later this month. Currently, the Harrier and Safari range are offered solely with a 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine that churns out 168 bhp and 350 Nm of peak torque. This oil burner can be had with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox.
