Partnering with JLR on the EMA platform is expected to position the 'Avinya' series competitively on a global scale.
Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd (TPEM) and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) have inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at advancing the development of TPEM's "premium pure electric" vehicle series, 'Avinya.' Both companies, which are fully owned subsidiaries of Tata Motors, will serve as the foundation for their next generation of "pure electric" SUVs, scheduled to debut starting in 2025. This platform has been designed to optimise the proportions of battery electric vehicles (BEVs), focusing on interior space, comfort, advanced electrical and electronic (E&E) architecture, connectivity, software capabilities, and over-the-air updates.
Anand Kulkarni, Chief Product Officer and Head HV Programmes, TPEM, said, “Being built on an architecture that is equipped with the latest advances in new age technology, software and artificial intelligence, Avinya will spawn a new breed of world-class EVs, with global standards in efficiency and range."
Under the agreement, TPEM will gain access to JLR's Electrified Modular Architecture platform, which encompasses various crucial components, including the electrical architecture, electric drive unit, battery pack, and manufacturing expertise. The collaboration extends further with an Engineering Services Agreement (ESA) that will support TPEM in its requirements for the initial stages of vehicle development.
The 'Avinya' concept, which was first unveiled in 2022, represents a forward-looking vision of electric mobility, emphasising in-cabin experience, connectivity, Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS), performance, safety, and refinement. Partnering with JLR on the EMA platform is expected to position the 'Avinya' series of Premium Pure Electric vehicles competitively on a global scale and equip them for the future of electric mobility.
By gaining access to JLR's EMA platform, TPEM aims to accelerate its entry into the high-end electric vehicle segment while reducing development cycle times and costs. Furthermore, JLR's advanced E&E architecture, which includes features like Level 2 autonomy, advanced connectivity, and comfort features, will propel TPEM's adoption of Software Over the Air (SOTA), Features Over the Air (FOTA), and safety technologies, including a 5-star Global NCAP rating. This collaboration ensures that TPEM will meet global standards for product efficiency and range.
This partnership is expected to create over 200 new jobs in the UK and represents a significant step forward in collaboration and synergies between Tata Group entities. Tata Motors' earlier acclaimed SUVs, the Harrier and Safari, were developed using JLR's D8 platform, and this collaboration takes the collaboration between these companies to a new level.
