The Nexon facelift has scored higher in child safety than the VW Virtus, Skoda Slavia and even the Hyundai Verna.
The Tata Nexon has achieved the highest Global NCAP score for adult and child occupant safety in the latest crash test result under #SaferCarsForIndia initiative by Global NCAP. The Nexon was the first model to achieve a five-star rating in 2018, and now in 2023, the Nexon facelift has managed to improve with a better result not just for adult occupants but also for child occupants. The new rating is valid for models produced as of August 8, 2023. An important thing to note here is that only the Tata Harrier and Safari have scored higher for child safety with 44 points out of 45 while the Volkswagen Virtus, Skoda Slavia and even the Hyundai Verna have scored lower than the Nexon facelift.
Alejandro Furas, Global NCAP Secretary General said, “Tata has consistently demonstrated its commitment to safety and the Nexon’s very significant result should be the example to follow by other car makers in India. The continuing evolution of Tata’s safety performance across the model range should make the company very proud.”
Mohan Savarkar, Chief Product Officer at Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, said, "Safety is ingrained in our DNA, and we are proud to earn the prestigious 5-star rating from Global NCAP for the new Nexon as per the enhanced 2022 protocol. It was the first car in India to receive a 5-star rating from GNCAP in 2018 and it upholds this legacy, showcasing our unwavering commitment to innovation and excellence. With this feat, all our new SUVs have now received the GNCAP 5-star rating certifications and have raised the bar for safer SUVs in India. We are dedicated to delivering vehicles that not only surpass expectations but also prioritise the safety of every passenger on the road."
In adult occupant protection, the Nexon facelift scored 32.22 points out of 34 points, improving upon the previous model with added points courtesy of 6 airbags and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) as standard. The previous model came fitted with 2 airbags on the base model and also scored a perfect rating with 16.06 points out of 17 points.
Global NCAP pointed out that the Nexon facelift offered good protection to the driver’s and passenger’s head and neck, while the driver’s and passenger’s chest showed adequate protection. The driver’s and passenger’s knees, and tibias showed good protection, while the footwell and the overall bodyshell were rated as stable and capable of withstanding further loadings.
For the side impact test, the head, abdomen and pelvis areas showed good protection while the chest showed adequate protection. In the side pole test, the availability of curtain airbags as standard fitment resulted in good protection to the head and pelvis, with marginal protection to the chest and adequate protection to the abdomen. Having ESC, and seat belt reminders as a standard fitment helped the Nexon score extra points.
For child occupant protection, the Nexon facelift scored 23.52 points out of 24 points, scoring perfect 5 stars, and improved upon the previous test, which received 25 points out of 49 points. Compared to the previous model, the Nexon facelift showed a stable structure and robust restraint systems which offered good protection.
The facelift also offered almost full protection for child occupants in the dynamic tests and came fitted with i-size anchorages and a passenger airbag disabling switch, making it very versatile for transporting child occupants. The car offers 3-point belts in all seating positions as standard in all versions, which also helped Nexon score extra points. The marking warning consumers about rearward facing CRS in the front passenger position fulfils the requirements. It offers the possibility to disconnect the passenger airbag in case a rearward-facing CRS will be installed in this position.
The Global NCAP also pointed out that the Nexon facelift meets with the UN127 and GTR9 requirements for pedestrian protection as standard, as well as complies with Global NCAP’s ESC requirements and offers seatbelt reminders in all seating positions. Under the new Global NCAP crash test protocols, the models are assessed for frontal and side impact protection for all models, as well as Electronic Stability Control (ESC). Pedestrian protection and side pole impact protection assessments are required for vehicles scoring the highest star ratings.
After the fantastic results of the Harrier and Safari, Tata Motors is making India proud at a global level with this 5-star performance of the Nexon, and while we expect the Bharat NCAP rating out soon as well don’t see it to be any different from the current one.
