Tata Power has expanded its MegaCharger footprint with a new 16-bay EV charging hub in suburban Mumbai, and for the first time, it is a co-branded venture with Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd, a sister concern under the Tata Group. The new facility has eight chargers with two bays each. Seven of the chargers are capable of 60W output while one is a 120W unit, which the recently launched Tata Harrier EV can take advantage of.
Described as Mumbai’s first premium large-scale EV charging hub, the facility is located within the parking area of the Leela Mumbai Hotel at Andheri (East), a few minutes away from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport T2. The companies are targeting private EV owners as well as taxis, fleet vehicles, and cargo vehicles. The 16 bays are all covered and are accessible 24/7 with adequate lighting, security, and staff on-ground as well as monitoring the chargers remotely.
The facility has space for additional chargers, and Tata Power will consider expanding the facility and upgrading the capacity of existing chargers over time. The company also claims that the facility is 100 percent powered by green energy generated using a combination of solar and wind, though it clarifies that this means all consumption is matched 100 percent with green energy through Tata Power’s grid. The company will be expanding its renewable energy generation capabilities, saying that most of its existing capacity is already allocated while demand is growing.
A typical 20-80 percent charge should take 30-40 minutes, though this will depend on car model, temperature, and various other factors. Tata EV owners will get a discount of up to ₹5 per unit. Payments are made via Tata Power’s EZ Charge app.
Similar hubs are planned for other cities including Pune, New Delhi, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Hyderabad. Despite recent reports of a slowdown in installations, the company says it has already deployed over 5,500 public and captive charging points across India along with 1.4 lakh home chargers. It has a presence in over 630 cities and towns across India, including roughly 350 out of 600 NHAI highways and expressways.
