This state-of-the-art facility aims to produce 40 gigawatts (GW) of battery cells annually.

Tata Sons has announced its latest venture in the United Kingdom (UK), planning to build a cutting-edge battery cell gigafactory. With over £4 billion investment, this state-of-the-art facility aims to produce 40 gigawatts (GW) of battery cells annually, significantly boosting electric mobility and renewable energy solutions for customers across the UK and Europe.

The battery gigafactory is expected to play a crucial role in the transition towards electric vehicles and renewable energy storage systems on a grand scale. With Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and Tata Motors as anchor customers, the gigafactory will begin its supplies in 2026. These two automotive giants are set to benefit from the facility's cutting-edge battery cells and packs, powering their electric vehicles with efficient and sustainable energy solutions.

Tata aims to maximize the use of renewable energy at the upcoming battery gigafactory, aspiring to operate with 100% clean power, thereby significantly reducing its carbon footprint. Additionally, the gigafactory will deploy innovative technologies and battery recycling processes to recover and reuse all original raw materials.

"Today, I am delighted to announce the Tata group will be setting up one of Europe's largest battery cell manufacturing facilities in the UK," said N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons. "Our multi-billion pound investment will bring state-of-the-art technology to the country, helping to power the automotive sector's transition to electric mobility, anchored by our own business, Jaguar Land Rover," he added.

UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, said, "Tata group's decision to build their new gigafactory here in the UK – their first outside of India – is a huge vote of confidence in Britain. This will be one of the largest ever investments in the UK automotive sector."
