Here's a look at some of the key trends that dominated the tech space this year.
2023 was a year of significant changes and innovation across the tech industry. From new devices to major industry shifts, several important trends emerged that will likely shape the future of technology. Here's a look at some of the key trends that dominated the tech space this year.
Android tablets witnessed a renaissance in 2023 with enhanced productivity features, bridging the gap between smartphones and laptops. Largely thanks to Android optimisations and a renewed focus on bigger screens, tablets such as the Xiaomi Pad 6, OnePlus Pad and Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 series now offer comfortable multitasking. Moreover, many of them present as a viable alternative to Apple's iPads thanks to their modern processors, beautiful OLED displays, and long battery life. Their lower price points compared to iPads make them appealing options for work and entertainment.
Speaking of lower prices, 2023 saw a surge in affordable True Wireless Stereo (TWS) earphones and other wearables. Companies like Nothing, Boat, Noise and others launched TWS earphones that offer good sound quality and features like active noise cancellation at lower prices than ever before.
In wearables, fitness trackers from boAt, Noise, Fire-Boltt and other brands have become popular because they don’t compromise on quality and offer features such as advanced health monitoring and longer battery life.
2023 marked the integration of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) into daily life, offering personalised experiences across various domains. Researchers at OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and others claimed improvements in developing large language models that can perform diverse tasks, while companies like Microsoft and Amazon made significant investments in spearheading AGI.
In India, Krutrim, a subsidiary of the Ola group, recently unveiled its latest AI platform that goes beyond the traditional scope of Large Language Models (LLMs). In addition, Reliance Jio in partnership with IIT Bombay is working to develop a LLM called Bharat GPT.
On the other hand on-device AI and privacy were big focus areas. Smartphones launched with powerful chips dedicated to running AI tasks locally instead of relying on cloud servers for tasks like translation and image recognition. This allows for experiences with less lag, while keeping user data private.
Many new foldable devices were launched in 2023, offering versatility and affordability. Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip5 remain at the pinnacle of the foldable experience. Meanwhile, brands like OnePlus and Tecno released their first foldable phones and have garnered lots of attention for their build quality and price.
In 2023, the technology industry was hit by rising inflation and economic uncertainty. Several tech giants, including Microsoft, Google, Meta, Twitter, and Amazon, announced layoffs, leading to thousands of employees losing their jobs across Silicon Valley and in other tech hubs, including India.
It wouldn't be wrong to say that 2023 demonstrated both promising areas of growth and challenges that will influence technology advances in the coming years. These trends around gadgets, services, AI and privacy will likely shape strategic priorities for tech brands and consumers stepping into 2024.
