Elon Musk is under fire because Tesla’s AI data centres are responsible for massive energy consumption in the US.
Elon Musk’s ambitious push into artificial intelligence through xAI is reportedly raising environmental alarms.
The company’s massive data centres, powering AI models on many Tesla vehicles, are consuming vast amounts of energy, contributing to significant pollution and straining local resources in the United States.
xAI’s facilities, particularly in Tennessee and Texas, are among the largest of their kind, designed to handle the computational demands of advanced AI. These centres require enormous electricity, often sourced from fossil fuel-heavy grids, leading to high carbon emissions.
Reports indicate that a single data centre can consume as much power as a small city, with cooling systems adding to the environmental toll. Local communities have voiced concerns over increased air and water pollution from these operations.
Residents near xAI’s Memphis site have reported disruptions, including noise and water usage spikes, as the centre expands rapidly.
Environmental groups are pressing for stricter regulations, arguing that Musk’s green credentials, bolstered by Tesla’s electric vehicles, are undermined by xAI’s reliance on non-renewable energy.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is reviewing data centre emissions, with potential new guidelines looming by 2026. xAI has pledged to explore renewable energy but faces challenges in scaling sustainable solutions quickly.
Musk defends the data centres as critical for advancing AI to benefit humanity, citing its AI chatbot Grok’s role in scientific discovery. However, critics argue that unchecked expansion risks long-term ecological harm.
The debate highlights a broader tension in the tech industry, where innovation often outpaces environmental accountability.
As xAI plans further growth, its ability to adopt cleaner energy will be crucial to appease regulators and communities while maintaining its AI leadership.
