This is Tesla's inaugural public deployment of fully autonomous vehicles for commercial passenger service.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk-owned Tesla has commenced operations of its autonomous ride-hailing platform in the US state of Austin, Texas, marking a key milestone in the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer's expansion into driverless transportation, reported Teslarati

Musk had posted on his social platform X that the company's "robotaxi launch" would start Sunday afternoon with rides for a flat fee of $4.20.

The launch marks Tesla's inaugural public deployment of fully autonomous vehicles for commercial passenger service, a venture the company has been developing for multiple years.

Notably, the ride-hailing service operates within a restricted geographic zone in South Austin, with journey times spanning approximately 30 minutes from one boundary to the other. Tesla's implementation strategy emphasises safety protocols through multiple protective measures integrated into this initial deployment phase.

A Tesla robotaxi drives on the street along South Congress Avenue in Austin, Texas, US, June 22, 2025. The service commenced operations around 2 pm local time on Sunday, using Tesla Model Y vehicles equipped with the company's autonomous driving technology.

Operational Structure

Passengers can access the service through Tesla's ride-hailing platform and are seated exclusively in the rear compartment of the Model Y vehicles. A Tesla safety supervisor occupies the front passenger seat during all trips, though this individual does not have access to vehicle controls such as pedals or steering mechanisms.

The autonomous system handles complete vehicle operation throughout each journey. Riders can access personalised entertainment and streaming content through integration with their Tesla driver profiles, providing a customised travel experience.

Pricing Per Trip

Current pricing maintains a fixed rate of $4.20 per trip regardless of distance or duration. Tesla indicates this uniform pricing structure will transition to variable rates based on factors including travel distance, trip duration, and potentially time-based demand when the service expands to broader customer segments.

Revenue Generation, Market Expansion

The robotaxi launch establishes a new income channel for Tesla as the company addresses ongoing questions regarding vehicle demand and annual growth projections. The autonomous ride-hailing service creates opportunities for substantial revenue expansion, with analysts projecting potential value creation in the billions of dollars.

Financial sector observers, including investment professionals who have long advocated for Tesla's autonomous vehicle capabilities, view this deployment as validation of the company's strategy to diversify beyond traditional automotive manufacturing into transportation services.

Regulatory Challenges

The lawmakers sent a letter to the company pushing for the launch to be moved to September, when an updated law on autonomous vehicles is set to take effect. Despite proceeding with the launch, Tesla faces regulatory scrutiny from Texas state officials who have expressed concerns about the timing of the deployment.

The service operates under current state regulations while lawmakers await implementation of revised autonomous vehicle legislation scheduled for September 2025.

Future Scaling

The Tesla robotaxi launch in Austin, Texas, on June 22 will include a limited number of vehicles. The initial rides will be in the Model Y and not the futuristic-looking CyberCab. Tesla's approach prioritises proven technology deployment over experimental vehicle designs, using existing Model Y platforms equipped with advanced autonomous driving capabilities.

The company plans gradual geographic expansion of the service area alongside increases in fleet size as operational data validates safety protocols and system reliability. This measured rollout strategy aims to build consumer confidence while refining the autonomous transportation platform.
