Let’s look at some highly-anticipated EVs coming to our shores in 2024.
As India sets its sights on a cleaner and greener future, the influx of electric vehicles from various global and domestic manufacturers is a promising step, especially with a slew of EVs already lined up for a market launch in 2024. Let’s take a look at a few of these highly-anticipated EVs coming to our shores next year.
After finding success with the flagship Q8 e-Tron, Audi India will bring in its latest Q6 e-Tron SUV followed by its Sportback variant, with a tentative launch by the end of 2024. Unlike the Q8 e-Tron, which is based on the VW Group’s MLB Evo platform. The upcoming Q6 e-Tron will be the first car to ride on the new PPE EV platform opening up new packaging possibilities and introducing a new electronic architecture.
Although the details are not yet completely revealed by Audi, expect the Q6 e-Tron to employ a dual-motor, four-wheel-drive powertrain developing 470 bhp and 800 Nm with a claimed range of 600 km on the WLTP cycle.
Next on our list is another German, this time from Munich. The BMW i5 electric sedan joins its sibling, the BMW i4 in the carmaker’s India portfolio. The electric equivalent of the 5 Series is offered in two versions globally—M60 xDrive and eDrive40 but we expect to receive the latter. The launch of the BMW i5 is expected to be around November 2024.
Powering the BMW i5 electric sedan is an 81.2 kWh lithium-ion with a combined power of 335 bhp and 430 Nm with a claimed range of 475 km on the WLTP cycle. Since the global debut of the i5, the electric sedan has garnered much appreciation for its aggressive looks and BMW’s latest curved display with the newest OS8.5 interface.
Moving on, the next on our list is the BYD Seal electric sedan. We first got a proper look of the EV at the Auto Expo 2023 and although the company claimed to debut the EV this year. Several roadblocks in acquiring the homologation have resulted in the launch being pushed to as early as February.
Having said that, what has us excited about the Seal is the introduction of BYD’s highly popular Blade Battery technology, which in comparison with traditional lithium-ion batteries holds advantages in its high safety, long range, enduring longevity, ultra-strength and high power. BYD will offer the Seal EV in both single- and dual-motor layouts and claims a range of 700 km on a single charge.
Citroën forayed into India’s EV market with the eC3 and although it’s too early to call it a success, the company is readying its next product to expand its EV line-up. Based on the C3 Aircross, its electric counterpart is on the cards for the company but there’s still some time most likely by the end of 2024.
Regardless, it will be the most affordable three-row electric SUV on offer in the country rivalling the likes of Tata Nexon EV, MG ZS EV and even the Mahindra XUV400.
This is possibly the most anticipated EV of 2024, the electric version of the very popular Creta SUV. With a tentative launch in the second half of 2024, Hyundai’s first mass-market EV will be a direct conversion to its ICE counterpart.
However, do expect EV-specific treatment to the exterior similar to the facelifted version of the Creta. Although unconfirmed, we expect the Creta EV to retain most features from the ICE Creta. Powering the EV will be a 45 kWh battery pack sourced from LG Chem.
Homegrown carmaker, Mahindra will also expand its EV portfolio, and joining the XUV400 will be the new XUV e8, which arrives later next year. The first of Mahindra’s next-gen EVs will be based on the INGLO skateboard platform. The new XUV e8 will carry forward the same basic layout, the same silhouette and the same three rows of seats as the XUV700.
Although unconfirmed, the upcoming XUV e8 is expected to feature an 80 kWh battery with two power outputs- 230 bhp and 350 bhp.
After introducing the EQC, EQB, EQS and the EQE SUV. Mercedes-Benz will expand its EV portfolio will two new launches in 2024. First up is the EQA, the electric derivative of the A-Class, with the launch likely in June 2024.
Unveiled globally last year, the EQA is expected to arrive on our shores by June 2024 and will be positioned as a more affordable EV offering in the company’s current line-up. Based on the MFA2 platform, the 5-seater electric SUV packs a 66.5 kWh battery pack and offers a claimed range of 486 km on the NEDC cycle.
Following the launch of the EQA, the German carmaker will showcase its new EQE sedan, a sister to the EQE SUV that already retails in India. The expected launch is in August 2024. The EQE sedan is based on the same platform as the EQS. And is not only smaller but will also be more affordable than its SUV counterpart.
It looks sleek and has an aerodynamic design with elements identical to the EQ line of electric vehicles. Powering the sedan will be the same battery as the SUV, a 90.6 kWh pack giving it a range of around 544 km on a single charge.
We’ve saved the big ones at the last. Tata Motors will be on a product onslaught in 2024. With not one, not two but three EVs coming our way. And we’ve even seen a few of these at the Auto Expo 2023.
First up is the Curvv, it is the most ambitious of the lot. To be positioned over the Tata Nexon EV in the company’s portfolio, the Curvv was shown in its concept form at the Auto Expo 2023 earlier this year.
While test mules have been caught testing across the country. Tata is said to take the car into series production in April, soon followed by its launch. Like Nexon, the Curvv will also be available in both EV and ICE forms with the launch of the EV slated for in May 2024.
Following the launch of the Curvv EV, Tata Motors will soon bring in the electric version of the Harrier SUV. We’ve seen the car at the Auto Expo 2023 and we believe that the concept was near production. Though it did come with a different design.
Nevertheless, we can expect the Harrier EV to look very similar to the Harrier facelift. What we can’t say with surety is the battery size that Tata will use on the Harrier EV. Our sources say that the EV is expected to employ either a 50 kWh or a 60 kWh battery pack, hinting at a 500 km claimed range.
Having said that, the Harrier EV will rival the Creta EV in the market and even the MG ZS EV to a certain extent. It will be interesting for sure, at what price point Tata will launch this electric SUV.
Last but not least, the electric version we’ve been waiting for a very long time will finally see the light of day. Tata Punch EV! Now, reports suggest that it will carry elements from the larger Harrier EV such as a large 10.25-inch centre touchscreen and even a 360-degree surround camera setup.
But we will only know anything for sure once the launch date approaches. Tata has been tight-lipped even on the battery specifications but it could be offered with two different battery pack options similar to that of its sibling, the Tiago EV.
With these promising EVs entering our market soon, consumers can finally look forward to a wide array of choices, from luxury sedans to compact SUVs, as the EV revolution gains momentum in India.
