This was achieved by amending the NH Fee Rules, 2008, which made it possible.

Motorists using National Highways with bridges, tunnels, and flyovers will benefit from substantially lower toll fees following a government decision to slash rates by up to 50%, reported PTI. These highways include structures such as the Atul tunnel, Bogibeel Bridge, and the Sudarshan Setu bridge, all of which have improved transportation in these areas.

The Road Transport and Highways Ministry modified the existing NH Fee Rules in 2008, establishing a new computational framework for toll collection on structured highway sections. This revision directly addresses the previously high charges levied on roads featuring complex engineering infrastructure.

How the New System Works

The updated formula, which has already been in effect since July 2, 2025, calculates fees using the lower of two options: either adding ten times the structure length to the remaining highway distance, or applying five times the total section length.

For illustration, consider a 40km highway comprised entirely of structures. The computation would be: 10 x 40km = 400km versus 5 x 40km = 200km. Travellers pay based on the smaller figure (200km), creating an immediate 50% cost reduction.

Immediate Benefits

According to NHAI officials, this adjustment provides direct financial relief to both individual drivers and commercial transport operators who regularly traverse these infrastructure-heavy routes. The change acknowledges that while complex structures are expensive to build, excessive toll charges can burden regular users.

The amendment notification from July 2, will offer instant savings across affected National Highway sections with construction monuments. Simultaneously, maintain the government's ability to fund ongoing infrastructure development projects.
