The first six months of the ongoing fiscal year has been an interesting phase for the Indian automotive industry, especially the passenger vehicle market. While the industry was briefly scarred after China imposed sanctions that restricted the export of rare earth magnets to several nations including India, OEMs in India have done well to prevent any massive disruption in production.

In fact, PV sales have been largely steady for the first half of the ongoing fiscal with the exception of September when the festive season usually lures consumers to the showrooms. Here is a rundown of how the top five best-selling PV brands have performed in the first half (H1) of FY2025-26 as compared to the same period in the previous financial year.

Maruti Suzuki

Although Maruti Suzuki’s market share in India’s passenger vehicle market has consistently declined in the post-COVID era, dipping below 40 percent in H1 FY2025-26, the Indo-Japanese automaker still maintains robust sales performance. Between April and September this year, Maruti dispatched a total of 1,032,481 units according to the SIAM data. During the same period the previous year, Maruti dispatched 992551 units.

The biggest contributor for Maruti in H1 FY2025-26 has been the Dzire with a total sales of 128652 units. Notably, Dzire received a major overhaul in November last year that has helped boost its performance. The sub-compact sedan was closely followed by Fronx with a total dispatch volume of 126658. Despite the fall in market share, Maruti continues to be the undisputed king of the Indian PV market. The market share for Maruti during this period was recorded at 38.79 percent.

Hyundai

According to SIAM, Hyundai continues to be the second-biggest player in the Indian PV market with 373,122 units dispatched including domestic and exports in H1 FY2025-26. Although slightly lower than the previous year’s shipment of 389,573 units, the Korean giant maintained a strong presence in the Indian automotive market.

The Creta turned out to be Hyundai’s trump card as always with a total volume of 106167 units dispatched during this period. In fact, Creta, which happens to be the best-selling model in the compact C-segment SUV space, was the only Hyundai to cross the 1 lakh dispatches in the first six months of FY2025-26. Models like Venue, Aura, and Grand i10 Nios also helped boost Hyundai's market position. The market share for Hyundai during this period was recorded at 16.21 percent.

Mahindra

Mahindra climbed up to the third spot in H1 FY2025-26 with 3,20,031 units dispatched during the said period. In comparison, the Chakan-based manufacturer raked in 2,60,505 during the same months the previous year. The Scorpio range, inclusive of the older Scorpio Classic and the modern Scorpio N, has been Mahindra’s best seller in this period selling 87,866 units including domestic sales and exports.

Also, the Electric Origin SUVs in the form of XEV 9e and BE 6 have been instrumental in Mahindra establishing a solid in the electric PV segment. Both electric SUVs have cumulatively sold 26,782 units in the first half of the ongoing fiscal. The market share for Mahindra during this period was recorded at 14.51 percent.

Tata Motors

Tata Motors dropped a spot to fourth after registering 2,69,206 units in H1 FY2025-26, almost mirroring the same figure as last financial year of 2,69,435 units. Nexon and Punch continue to be the perennial volume churners for the homegrown automaker, with 89,557 units and 125,663 units sold in this period respectively. In fact, with 22,573 units sold, September 2025 turned out to be the best month for Nexon ever since it went on sale in early 2017.

At the same time, new launches like the refreshed Altroz and the all-new Harrier.ev have helped gain some momentum in the last couple of months. The market share for Tata Motors during this period was recorded at 12.92 percent.

Toyota

Toyota has somewhat gotten back on track in the last couple of years after a long period of lull, largely thanks to its international alliance with Suzuki who has helped them with rebadged models and shared platforms. This has boosted the Japanese carmaker’s sales. Case in point is the Urban Cruiser Hyryder which recorded a volume of 76,619 units in the first half of FY26.
